Loki’s Fight to Recover After Multiple Surgeries

Our sweet boy Loki has been fighting for his life for over a month.
On August 10th, Loki was rushed to Veterinary Emergency Services (VES) with a complete urinary blockage; a painful, life-threatening condition. He was catheterized, hospitalized, put on IV fluids, and given pain relief to stabilize him.
Over the next several days (Aug 11–13), Loki had to return repeatedly to the hospital. He required multiple catheter placements, bloodwork, urinalyses, imaging, and medications to manage crystals, inflammation, and bladder trauma. Each stay brought a little improvement, but he continued to strain, pass blood, and risk re-blocking.
By September 5th, Loki suffered another full blockage. At that point, his vets confirmed what we had feared: diet and medications would no longer be enough. The only option left was surgery.
On September 10th, Loki underwent a major procedure called Perineal Urethrostomy (PU surgery). This delicate surgery permanently widens the urinary opening to prevent blockages from forming. We were told it would give him the best chance at a normal life.
But just two days later, on September 12th, tragedy struck. Loki developed a rupture in his bladder/urethra, and urine began leaking into his abdomen — an immediate, life-threatening complication. He underwent an emergency abdominal surgery with repair and lavage, and was later transferred to VES for overnight ICU monitoring.
The Financial Reality
Here’s what this fight has cost so far:
- Initial ER hospitalizations, transfers, meds, and diagnostics (Aug 10–Sep 5): about $3,500
- PU surgery & recovery hospitalization (Sep 10): about $2,000
- Emergency abdominal repair surgery (Sep 12): $1,333.76
- Overnight ICU monitoring at VES (Sep 13): pending, more charges expected
Total so far: about $6,800–$7,000, with more still to come.
Why We Need Help
Loki is only 5 years old. He is otherwise healthy, playful, and full of love. He has already endured multiple ER visits, two major surgeries, weeks of medications, and now ICU care. He deserves the chance to come home, heal, and live pain-free.
But these emergencies have come one after another, leaving us emotionally drained and financially overwhelmed. We’ve stretched to cover as much as possible, but we are having a hard time doing this alone anymore.
