The COVID-19 crisis is a worldwide problem and strikes everyone. This crisis affects especially developing countries like Cambodia. Around 200 Cambodian children who live in the slums of Phnom Penh are at risk because education can no longer be given. A future as a child labourer on the nearby dumpsite is becoming a reality. Community Centre Colt wants to prevent this. Do you want to help as well?
What is COLT standing for?
COLT (Cambodian Organization for Living and Temporary care) is a community centre in the Choeng Ek neighbourhood, also known as the Killing Fields. For more than 10 years they take care of the welfare of children whose parents are working on the nearby dump fills. The children grow up under difficult circumstances. Bad hygiene, domestic violence, addicted parents and crime are daily problems for them. COLT has been fighting for years for a better future for these children. Every day, the children receive English lessons, life skills training, psychosocial support and medical care from local as well as international professionals and volunteers. COLT also offers long-term shelter for children who can not live with their parents anymore.
The COVID-19 outbreak
In February 2020 there was a world-wide outbreak of COVID-19. Not only Dutch schools, but also the COLT Community centre had to shut their gates. Aggravating the situation, the international students and volunteers can not travel to Cambodia anymore. There is no one to teach English to the COLT children, no one to teach them how to wash their hands and no one to coach the football team anymore. Who will prevent these children following their parents’ footsteps and start working on the dumpsite?
Local teachers and interns
As COLT alumni we decided to join forces and start a campaign. Locally we can’t help the COLT children for now. But as a remote contributor we can support them off course. You can help as well. Will you join us?
Who are we?
We are students at the Windesheim University in Zwolle. From our own disciplines we carried out several developing projects for COLT in the past. This was commissioned by the International Sustainable Development minor (ISD). We taught classes four days a week, provided workshops on hygiene, did activities with the children once every two weeks and assisted where necessary. Although we have witnessed the importance of international students for the continuity of the COLT-activities with our own eyes, it also became clear that this dependence makes the organization vulnerable.
Our campaign plan
What’s our plan? In agreement with the COLT board in the Netherlands and the local staff we want to sponsor 1 local teacher and 3 (paid) local interns for COLT. These new, local professionals can, when the schools open their doors again, continue our work. This will even be a huge benefit for the children at COLT. Because the teachers know the Cambodian culture and language better than us. How fantastic would it be if COLT will exit the crisis stronger than before? As an independent, sustainable and locally resilient organisation.
Price tag
We want to remove the barrier to work for COLT. We want to give a donation for the local volunteers and interns. From this donation they could pay for their own studies. When COLT pays for part of their studies, the need to work elsewhere reduces, allowing them to use their time to help underprivileged children at COLT while also gaining experience. But there is a price tag of course. For this, we ask your support. To pay the local professional teacher and interns a fair salary, we first of all need at least 7000 dollar.
$3.500,- for an annual salary for a professional teacher
$3.500,- for three interns each year
As the COLT community centre is located 14 kilometres outside the capitol Phnom Penh, which is also a barrier. We want to compensate the travel costs of this local professionals as well the interns/volunteers to remove this barrier. They have to spend around three dollars a piece for gas on a daily basis. Converted to a yearly basis, we need 5000 dollar extra to cover these costs.
To summarize, the amount of money we need per month:
Transport costs for a volunteer: $50
Student intern costs: $ 250
Local teacher salary: $ 450
Study material: $ 125
With the help of 4 local teachers we can help provide education and medical support for 200 COLT children a month in Cambodia.

De Corona crisis is overal en raakt iedereen. De crisis slaat extra hard toe in ontwikkelingslanden zoals Cambodja. Tweehonderd Cambodjaanse kinderen die les krijgen bij COLT, wonen in de sloppenwijken van Phnom Penh. Zij kunnen nu geen onderwijs meer volgen. Een toekomst als kinderarbeider op de nabijgelegen vuilnisbelt dreigt. Community center COLT wil dat voorkomen. Jij ook?

COLT (Cambodian Organization for Living and Temporary care) is een gemeenschap centrum in de wijk Choeng Ek, ook wel bekend als de Killing Fields. Al meer dan tien jaar ontfermen zij zich over het welzijn van kinderen wiens ouders op de nabijgelegen vuilnisbelt werken. De kinderen groeien op onder moeilijke omstandigheden. Slechte hygiëne, huiselijk geweld, verslaafde ouders en criminaliteit zijn dagelijkse problemen voor hen. COLT strijdt al jaren voor een betere toekomst voor deze kinderen. Elke dag krijgen ze Engelse les, life skills trainingen, psychosociale ondersteuning en medische hulp van lokale maar ook internationale professionals en vrijwilligers. Er komen ook dorpskinderen uit de omgeving om deze lessen te volgen. COLT biedt daarnaast langdurig onderdak aan kinderen die echt niet meer bij hun ouders kunnen wonen.
De Corona uitbraak
In februari 2020 brak het Corona virus wereldwijd uit. Niet alleen Nederlandse scholen werden getroffen. Ook COLT moest haar deuren sluiten. Tot overmaat van ramp kunnen internationale studenten en vrijwilligers ook niet meer afreizen naar Cambodja. Wie geeft er nu nog Engelse les aan de COLT kinderen? Wie leert ze hun handen te wassen? Wie coacht het voetbalteam nog op zondag? Wie voorkomt dat deze kinderen in het voetspoor van hun ouders op de vuilnisbelt moeten gaan werken?
Lokale docent en stagiaires
Als COLT alumni besluiten we de handen ineen te slaan en een campagne te starten. Ter plekke kunnen wij de COLT kinderen voorlopig niet meer helpen. Maar als donateur op afstand nog wel natuurlijk! Ook jij kunt dat doen. Doe je mee?

Wij zijn studenten van Hogeschool Windesheim in Zwolle. We hebben allemaal vanuit onze eigen disciplines projectwerkzaamheden verricht voor COLT in het verleden. Dit in opdracht van de minor International Sustainable Development (ISD). We hebben vier dagen in de week lessen verzorgd, zouden workshops gaan geven over bijvoorbeeld hygiëne ect, één keer in de twee weken activiteiten doen met de kinderen die bij COLT wonen & bijspringen waar nodig was. Hoewel we nu met eigen ogen kunnen hebben kunnen zien hoe belangrijk internationale studenten en vrijwilligers is voor de continuïteit van de COLT-werkzaamheden, werd ook duidelijk dat deze afhankelijkheid de organisatie kwetsbaar maakt.

Wat is ons plan? In overleg met het COLT bestuur in Nederland en de lokale staf willen we graag één lokale docent en drie (betaalde) lokale stagiaires voor COLT aannemen. Deze nieuwe, lokale professionals kunnen, zodra de scholen weer opengaan, ons werk voortzetten. Eigenlijk is dit zelfs een kwaliteitsslag voor de kinderen bij COLT. Want lokale docenten kennen de Cambodjaanse taal en cultuur natuurlijk veel beter dan wij. Hoe fantastisch zou het zijn als COLT zelfs sterker uit de Corona crisis kan komen. Als een onafhankelijke, duurzame en lokaal weerbare organisatie!
Prijskaartje
We willen de drempel wegnemen om voor COLT te komen werken. We willen de lokale vrijwilligers en stagiaires een donatie geven. Van deze donatie kunnen ze hun eigen studie betalen. Wanneer COLT een deel van de studie betaalt, is de noodzaak om ergens anders te werken kleiner, waardoor ze die tijd kunnen gebruiken om kansarme kinderen bij COLT te helpen en tegelijkertijd ervaring op kunnen doen. Daar hangt wel een prijskaartje aan vast. Precies daarvoor vragen wij jouw steun. Om deze lokale professionele docent en stagiaires een eerlijk salaris te geven hebben we ten eerste 7000 dollar nodig:
$3.500 voor één jaarsalaris van een professionele docent
$3.500 voor drie stagiaires per jaar
Ook een drempel, COLT ligt veertien kilometer buiten de hoofdstad van Phnom Penh. De reiskosten willen we compenseren zodat deze drempel weggenomen wordt. Per dag zijn ze gemiddeld drie dollar per persoon aan benzine kwijt. Omgerekend op jaarbasis hebben we dus 5000 dollar extra nodig om deze kosten te dekken. Dit valt mee in vergelijking met de vliegtickets die de internationale studenten moeten betalen. Het wordt dus ook nog eens duurzamer.
