Loiza, Puerto Rico Recovery Fund

About Me:

For those who don't know me personally, my name is Jon Pineiro and I was born and raised in Loiza, Puerto Rico and I currently live in Miami, Florida.

I am raising these funds in order to take supplies to Puerto Rico and assist the community of Loiza, Puerto Rico. I have been paying for generators, food, freight, and more with my own money and will be using this money that we raise to help offset those costs.

Our trip to Puerto Rico is 11/2 and we already have purchased 27 generators that are on the island already, in addition to over 1,600 pounds of food, medicine, baby supplies, and other relief materials. Funds will be used to help pay for the costs of all these items as well as the cost of getting them to the island.

Updated Goals and Strategy 10/17:

Thank you to everyone who has donated to us so far! We have been hard at work getting our plans together and have important updates on what we will be doing when we make our trip to Puerto Rico from November 2nd to November 5th.

1. We partnered with the non-profit Water With Blessings to purchase 200 Sawyer PointONE water filters . These filters attach to buckets (or other large containers where water can be stored) and are powered by gravity. They are sustainable, light-weight and remove 99.9% of bio-contaminants from well water, rain water, river water, lakes, streams or even flood water. They also help eliminate waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid and E.coli. Once we are on the ground, we will distribute these filters to local politicians and leaders, community groups, schools, and churches to provide centers for residents to get access to gallons of clean water. Once potable water runs from faucets again, these filters can be stored and used during future hurricanes and natural disasters. This is a win-win; a solution for now and the future!

2. With the help of Water With Blessings, we have purchased one thousand 4oz bottles of Picaridin Insect Repellent . This is one of the strongest repellents on the market and will be a huge help to people on the ground in Puerto Rico. The conditions on the island are ripe for mosquito borne diseases such as Zika to be spread widely and by providing these repellents to people we can help them protect themselves. With the help of the mayor of Loiza and her team, we will distribute these repellents to those in the community who are most in need, including the thousands currently living in shelters.

3. We have purchased ten lightweight Generac generators we will distribute to community centers, schools and other places where large numbers of people congregate in order to have the maximum impact. These generators are high-powered, but light enough to be transported easily to various locations and shared.

4. We are collecting items from the larger South Florida community to bring with us. Currently we are putting a priority on baby foods and formulas, of which there is a large need in Loiza. We have also a confirmed donation of insulin that we will take with us and distribute to diabetic patients in need. The more funds we receive, the more we can continue to purchase items including canned and non-perishable food, batteries, medication, women’s products, personal hygiene products and more.

We’ve been busy to make sure our trip is as impactful as it possibly can be. Thank you for helping us get this far, and please continue sharing and donating! The more help we receive the more we can spread once we are on the ground in Puerto Rico.

Thank you,

Jon

Original Post:

Hi friends,

My brother, my nephew and myself raised funds to make a mission trip from October 1st to October 3rd to Loiza, Puerto Rico where we were born and raised and where many of our family members live. Loiza was hit extremely hard by both Hurricane Irma and Maria and is in bad shape. We were able to bring over 1000lbs of supplies including food and water on this trip as well as six generators.

More importantly, we were able to connect with a local church of 300 members and the mayor of Loiza, Julia M. Nazario, who cried tears of frustration as she told us about the needs of the community that are not being met by FEMA or the central government in Puerto Rico.

We are looking to raise $35,000 that will help us do even more for this community in dire need. These funds will go toward buying and shipping 60,000 water bottles and 20,000 mosquito repellent kits. In our talks with the mayor and the pastor, it is clear that these items are most necessary for the community to have.

In addition, we will be making further contacts on the ground and look to fill more needs in the coming days and weeks.

I invite you to be part of this cause by sharing, donating or connecting me with people that might be able to help us achieve our goal, one bottle of water and repellent at a time.

Thank you and god bless!
