Loíza Fe: Futuro de Energía para Villa Cañona

Tax deductible
Could you imagine living without electricity for 9+ months?! That's what happened in Puerto Rico in 2017 and the power grid there is still precarious. Donate today and you can protect an entire community when the next blackout inevitably strikes. Help fund this project and it will allow us to work alongside the people of Villa Cañona to bring reliable, clean energy to their community center, giving them the self-sufficiency and resilience they need to weather future climate disasters.

Villa Cañona is part of the traditionally Afro-Puerto Rican community of Loíza  which was devastated by Hurricanes Irma and María.  Millions across the island faced dire food and water shortages, and power was entirely knocked out for months. It was only through mutual aid among an ad hoc network of community groups that most community members survived through those bleak times. One of those critical community groups is Comité Pro-Desarrollo Villa Cañona, based in one of the worst-hit sections of Loíza. The Comité is a nonprofit and pillar of the community.

We are building resilience in the Villa Cañona neighborhood with our project "Loíza FE: Futuro de Energia para Villa Cañona." In Spanish, fe means faith- but we also think it involves the Future of Energy. Our project will provide solar panels, battery storage and water purification in Villa Cañona.

This system would:
· support the newly rebuilt community center that provides day-to-day support services and meals for seniors, youth programming of all sorts, business and computer skills training, an annual MLK Day bike ride, and much more
· allow the community center to act as a self-sufficient communal kitchen and emergency shelter during future storms (including the refrigeration of perishable food & medication)
· purify water for drinking and cooking
· generate clean electricity (clean electricity also means not having to run horribly noisy and polluting generators)
· offer an uninterruptible satellite hotspot to enable communication
· provide cellphone charging ability
· illuminate a communal space for people to take shelter
· supply free solar energy that, incrementally expanded across the island, will improve air quality and alleviate associated health problems
· train local electricians in PV installation and maintenance
· raise awareness about the benefits of clean, local energy!

Donate today and together we will empower the community of Villa Cañona!

More about the coordinators:
Climable is a woman-run nonprofit that communicates the ideas behind climate science and clean energy so they are understandable and actionable for everyone. Climable then takes that information and applies it to clean energy projects in low- and moderate-income neighborhoods, as they are the ones most vulnerable to climate change.

Clean Water Action works to protect our environment, health, economic well-being and community quality of life. Clean Water Action organizes strong grassroots groups and coalitions, and campaigns to elect environmental candidates and to address environmental injustice and community problems.
