A New Life for Sirga the Lioness

Donation protected

Sirga's story:
Sirga was around 10 days old when she was left behind by her family. She was hand raised by Val since then and she has become the most important thing in his life. On many hundreds of walks in the savannah she learned to hunt and experienced life like a free lion. To see her remarkable story, be sure to watch, "Saving Sirga: Journey Into the Heart of a Lion," currently available on Amazon Prime. SIrga is now 8 years old and will soon live a truly free life in her own protected reserve.

The team from Modisa Wildlife Project managed to find a private and remote reserve for Sirga and built a new enclosure. We moved our office and Sirga to our new home. Thanks to the generous support of Sirga's loyal donors, we have reach our funding goal to complete her Freedom Boundary and obtain the necessary equipment to ensure her safety.  Once in place Sirga will have the freedom to roam. She has begun investigating her new home on walks with Val and she could not be happier! She now waits for the door to open and walk outside and go on her hunts again. Soon she will be able to every day.

Sirga's enclosure is 2000 ha large and holds enough wildlife for Sirga to live here sustainably.
Val and our team will always be around to look after Sirga and she will can come visit any time she so chooses! We will monitor Sirga's movements in her new space to ensure her safety.  If she gets sick we will take care of her, if she gets skinny we will feed her extra food, if she wants to hug Val she can, but if she wants to be free and live a lions life, she can! One day many years from now, when she is too old to hunt, we will ensure her retirement will be spent with plenty of food and water and the necessary medical care while she can still roam her reserve. SIrga's GPS collar will ensure that we can find her should we not be certain of her well being and whereabouts.

The fence on her reserve is a standard wildlife fence with electric wires and mesh wire to keep her safe from walking away into an area where humans and their livestock are and where lions get shot. The fence also ensures that humans cannot get near Sirga since there is a good chance she would cause a fatal accident if anyone other than Val encounters her.

The Modisa Wildlife Project is building a tourist facility for a ecotourism experience and the proceeds from the camp will ensure that Sirga will be taken care of financially in the future, her reserve's fence and fire-breaks will be maintained, fresh water will be available and whatever else she will need will be there for her.  Sadly, due to the Covid19 pandemic, this project is on hold and will not be able to begin operation until travel restrictions are lifted.

Continued funding is needed during this extended closure to ensure the care of Sirga and for other animals we rescues and release on a regular basis.
