Starting Work-Base Africa

Donation protected
Hello Everyone,

My name is Lois Turner, and I have an incredible opportunity to help pioneer a vocational school, called 'Work-Base', in Johannesburg, South Africa; the school will be aimed at vulnerable youth and orphans. Work- Base is a project that is going to be set up by 'Home-Base'-an 'African Havens' initiative.

Due to gaps in their learning, many orphaned youth are unable to go to university. Vocational training is an excellent option, however, good training schools can be hard to find. Often the quality of the material offered, teaching standards, facilities and qualifications are not of a good standard; while quality institutions are too expensive for these learners.

Home-Base realising this, meant the launch of Work-Base was decided; a non-profit, vocational training school for orphans and vulnerable youth. The goal of Work-Base is to prepare them for the world of work. We are partnering with other institutions to provide excellent accredited training, such as City & Guilds and Umalusi. Every year in southern Africa hundreds of orphans and vulnerable children in child-care organisations 'age out' of the system, either when they turn 18 or when they finish school. Many leave the only home they have known in years with nowhere to go, no possibility of good employment, and certainly no chance of further studies. Work-Base is focused on helping these young people navigate their next steps, providing them with hope and a future.

Although the emphasis of Work-Base is vocational training, It will integrate this with life skills and character development, work-based experience, entrepreneurship, and ongoing support. We believe making these students achieve to their full potential in EVERY aspect of their lives.

It will create a number of schools within Work-Base that focus on different areas of vocational training.Starting with:

• School of Hospitality

• School of Hair and Beauty

The money raised will go towards renting accommodation for the students (£3600 for 1 year/ £300 per month) and  to help with travelling costs.

From an early age I have always had a desire to help vulnerable youth in Africa. This has only grown over the last few years, as I have helped to teach street children and orphans in Swaziland. Now, having had over a year of experience teaching in an orphanage, and having completed a degree in Education and Psychology, I feel honoured that I can help pioneer something so worthy and close to my heart. I am literally going to be living my dream and hopefully helping others live theirs!

Thank you for all your support and encouragement for my next adventure.
