Funeral expenses and family support

Gone too soon!

Our dad, Lloyd Anthony Sherwood tragically and unexpectedly passed away on February 27, 2018 at the age of 64. With an expired life insurance policy and very limited funds, this fundraising campaign is so that we can respectfully put him to rest and also help with the mountain of bills left behind by recent financial hardship and high medical expenses.

Along with being a loving father of 3, dad was also a grandfather, spouse, and a friend to many. He was a very hard worker with a wonderful sense of humor.

Emigrating from Jamaica to the U.S. in 1987, he always held a job, sometimes two at a time! He eventually made his way to New York in the mid 90’s where he was remarried, had his third and final child Semoni, and worked as a barber in the Bronx/Park Chester area.

In 2013, he suffered two strokes which nearly brought his active lifestyle to a crawl. But his faith and great desire to be a grandfather propelled him forward. He recovered.

On November 29, 2014, his firstborn daughter Nedra and her husband Nathan would finally, after 16 years of marriage and many years of trying, birth their first child, and Lloyd's first and only grandchild!  Our dad was excited to see his precious grandson Nicolas grow into a strong young man.

Dad was unaware that he had an enlarged heart and high cholesterol until October 2017, when he suffered a heart attack and subsequently underwent two heart surgeries, including a bypass. By God’s grace he survived, remained in good spirits and was on the road to recovery.

Due to the impact on his body from the strokes and heart surgeries, it became difficult for dad to stand up for long periods of time and skillfully cut hair as he had been doing for over 20 years! Many of his clients had to go elsewhere, and his ability to earn income decreased significantly. On top of the medical bills racking up and his youngest daughter being in college, needless to say, money was tight. Somewhere along the line, his life insurance policy lapsed for non-payment.

This leads us to February 27, 2018. Witnesses say that he was walking funny, as if his legs were unstable. He had been doing really well; taking his medications and eating right. Early that morning as his wife Sabrina was leaving for work, he was even joking around with her as usual. But something bad started happening as he got up to get ready to open the barber shop. Blood started pooling up into a spot in his lower leg that he injured 20 years prior. Somehow it started to clot, and as he was about to get into the shower, the pressure from the clotting caused a rupture of the blood vessel and his thinning skin broke open. Because of the blood thinners he was taking due to the previous heart attack, the blood sprayed rapidly from the wound. He was alone, scared, and frantically tried to find something to stop the bleeding. It was too late. He had lost too much blood too fast, and he perished on the living room floor of his apartment.

Our dad was a great man. Many people loved and respected him. We are told he was easily one of the most well-known and liked individuals in the Bronx Park Chester neighborhood where he lived and worked. He was known by everyone as a funny, kind, and caring man - “The Barber”; by many as “The Mayor of Parkchester”; by a few as “Dad” (Nedra, Richard, Semoni); by one as “husband” (Sabrina Sherwood); by one as “grandpa” (Nicolas); and most importantly, by his Heavenly Father as “Son - come on home”.

There are no words to express our gratitude for your kindness, prayers, support, and gift of love during this difficult time. Thank you from the Sherwood and Rhodes Family.  May God richly bless you for your contribution.
