Although going through a period of rapid development, Cambodia is still home to too many people living below the poverty line of $1.25/day. The average number of years spent at school is just 5, and every year, 300,000 youths enter the labour force lacking the required skills. As always, it is females who suffer the most. (UNICEF, 2013).
New Cambodian Artists is a small organisation with a big heart with a vision to change this. Our philosophy is “female empowerment through dance”. We are the only completely female contemporary dance troupe in Siem Reap.Lead by a young female Khmer, we are pushing the boundaries and adding layers to Cambodian culture, creating socially and politically relevant works that facilitate discussion and provoke new perceptions of Cambodia . Through the creation of these works and daily workshopping, we empower our women to think critically and creatively and to become confident female leaders and role models within their society.
Our newest project is focussed on community outreach. We are excited to be connecting with local NGO’s and presenting our work to Cambodian youth, along with workshops, in order to spread our ideas further afield and build an engaged and innovative creative Khmer community.
However, we have hit a bit of a roadblock. This is where you come in. Much to our surprise and disappointment, there has been a sudden cancellation in funding which we were expecting to have until April 2015. Because of this, we have had to decrease performer wages and put a hold on our plans to expand. Not ones to give up easily, this is us, asking you to help.
In Cambodia, a little bit goes a long way. If we can raise just $1500, we can continue to fund the people and resources we need to continue our plans. So we ask you now, from the bottom of our hearts, please donate whatever you can and show your support. We will be forever grateful!
