Ljiljana & her life struggle

[ English translation fallows below ]

Točnije, „otvorena“, i „zatvorena“!

Igle i cjevčice postali su Ljiljanini novi organi.

Sve do onog dana!

⁎⁎⁎  I am establishing this foundation as a practical help to my niece Ljiljana, who is in a very difficult life situation  ⁎⁎⁎

Ljiliana Hoic is a palliative care nurse and a single mother of two young girls, Nina (age 18), and Tara, (age 16).

Just over a year ago, she become nervous because her arms and hands were constantly itching. Ljiljana was convinced that it was an allergic reaction. Once, as by the way, she went to take medical tests. She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Ljiljana was operated by emergency procedure. More precisely, "open" and "closed"! The risk of vascular damage and possible death on the operating table caused by bleeding was too high. The doctors gave up. She was offered chemotherapy as an alternative that would only slightly extend her life. A weakened organism, a severely ill body, would not stand it! At that moment, one narrow door opened. There was one doctor who believed! He offered his hands may the Lord allow Ljiliana to stay around her two young daughters.

Ljiljana was operated for the 2nd time. Her organs were removed: pancreas, spleen, part of the stomach, part of the small and part of the large intestine, as well as a tumor that engulfed the organs. Ljiljana survived the surgery. Many have attributed such an outcome to a miracle. However, Ljiliana did not wake up from the narcosis. The situation became critical again. Then, a miracle happened. It was  the second  one! Ljiljana opened her eyes.

A lengthy and difficult period of treatment followed. Ljiljana and her two daughters went to battle for life and togetherness. With the removal of the pancreas, Ljiljana became a lifelong diabetic. Blood sugar control is required every 3 hours throughout the 24 hours of the day. Nina and Tara share on-call nights and try to measure sugar and inject insulin without disturbing Mom's sleep. For the next 5 months, Ljiljana received the food parenterally (by inserting a central venous catheter in her neck), and the small intestine was connected to the outer sac through the abdominal wall for 8 months. Needles and tubes became Ljiljana's new organs.

Gemzar chemotherapy followed; cycles of 3 weeks of application and 1 week of break are still exchanging. The body is faint. Recovery from each subsequent application is increasingly difficult. The only thing that isn't is Ljiliana's faith. The girls are doing their best. Nina is completing her 4th year of  medical high school, fallowing  her mom's steps. She took over the household very responsibly. Classes, homework, school practice, cooking, and helping mom, they alternate. But Nina manages all! She even has time for herself. It's a wonder how life teaches us to find 36 hours in 24 real ones. Tara is a 2nd grade student in high school specializing for beautician. Although the youngest in the house, she manage to contribute equally, listening to her older sister's instructions. Using the silence within herself, in the four corners of her room, she learned to hide her fear and step out with a smile on her face and big blue eyes that kept a secret. Nina and Tara spent the summer without school obligations, replacing them with work responsibilities to contribute to financial stability in the home. The only income during sick leave is a maternity wage less 30% of the regular salary.

The new school year has reawakened the atmosphere. These women are not surrendering! Chemotherapy takes its toll: strength, peace, but it does not touch faith. To all! Ljiljana tries to improve the impaired quality of life by taking preparations and supplements that boost immunity and further strengthen the body. That has its price, the one that Ljiljana is able to pay for now: 140€ / month.

Ljiljana is optimistic. Still, she fears one thing: she has a debt and bank loan to repay the apartment they live in. Namely, even before she became ill, Ljiljana went bravely into action - buying an apartment to provide a home for her female family. Until this illness, there were no problems because Ljiljana was diligently doing her job and receiving a salary that was sufficient for all needs, including credit costs for the apartment. Until that day! And then everyday life went downhill and transformed into a completely different everyday life fulfilled with suffering and uncertainty.

Life is often very rough, but then it gives us the opportunity to learn a lot more than we normally would. That is why I am inviting you to participate in this venture for Ljiljana and, I am sure, you are going to have  opportunity to feel  great and good in yourself when standing  by somebody! With all my heart, I believe that, in addition to the funds raised, which will be of great benefit to Ljiljana and her daughter, her fight for the health and safety of the family will be added to her life force in every day until that day - when Ljiljana and her girls are going to be carefree again knowing that life is a great and worthwhile miracle.

I thank you all in advance for EACH AND EVERY donation, but also for  SHARING Ljiljana's story that is equally important for the success of this action. See how Ljiljana's friends and colleagues reacted and what they have to say about Ljiljana, all on her facebook profile
