On 7/21, I will be heading down to volunteer with Al Otro Lado for several days to help with intake at the Mexico-CA border.
We will be assisting asylum seekers by securely scanning and tracking paper work, providing workshops to strengthen their asylum cases, pairing them with U.S. sponsors, and extending aid and comfort throughout this devastating and hellish process.
This is something that is incredibly personal to me. My mother immigrated to the United States from El Salvador as a child for reasons similar to people from Central American countries today. She’s the epitome of living the American dream. She has been incredibly successful, provided her kids with everything, and now even patrols the streets as a law enforcement officer keeping people here in LA safe.
She (+ my stepdad, and my Dad, also the son of immigrants) have given me an incredible life and have contributed tremendously to this country themselves through their work and investments. And as a result of their hard work, dedication, and resilience, I have been given opportunities that people all over the world only dream of.
I believe in this country wholeheartedly, the melting pot that is the US, and that diversity truly is one of this country’s strongest traits.
Although I will be paying for my way there and for my stay, supplies are not being accepted through the border so monetary contributions will help us provide refugees with food and other basic needs once we get to Tijuana. If you have asked yourself "What can I do to help?" this is how you can get involved. Your donations will go a long way in helping with asylum seekers’ travel and legal expenses, as well as food and other supplies. Join me at the frontline by giving a donation today!
