Der Moment, in dem unser Leben stillstand 
 
Stell dir ein neugeborenes Baby vor. 

Warm. Weich. Gesund geboren. 

Du hältst es im Arm und glaubst, dass ihm nichts passieren kann. 
 
Bei der U3 hörte unser Kinderarzt plötzlich ein auffälliges Herzgeräusch. 

Er wurde still, legte das Stethoskop wieder auf und sah uns ernst an. 

Er sagte nicht viel – aber er überwies uns sofort zum Kardiologen. 
 
Nur wenige Stunden später saßen wir beim Kardiologen, 

der Liv untersuchte, ein Echo machte und dann den Satz sagte, 

der unser Leben in zwei Hälften teilte: 
 
„Ihr Baby hat einen schweren Herzfehler.“ 
 
Liv war erst wenige Wochen alt. 
 
Mit sieben Wochen lag sie das erste Mal 

mit geöffnetem Brustkorb auf einem OP-Tisch. 

Mit neun Monaten folgte die zweite Operation am offenen Herzen. 
 
Damals dachte ich, dass es nichts Schlimmeres geben kann. 

Dass diese Angst das Maximum ist, das ein Elternherz ertragen kann. 
 
Heute weiß ich, dass das nur der Anfang war. 
 
Der erste Anfall – und der Verdacht, der jede Mutter zerbrechen lässt 
 
Dann kam der erste Krampfanfall. 

Unerwartet. Heftig. Brutal. 

Ein Moment, in dem du glaubst: Ich verliere sie jetzt. 
 
Liv wurde sofort auf Epilepsie-Medikamente eingestellt. 

Zweieinhalb Jahre lang war sie sediert, 

selbst im Alltag kaum „bei sich“. 
 
Und während wir versuchten, diesen Alltag zu überstehen, 

kam die Diagnose, die uns den Boden unter den Füßen wegriss: 
 
Verdacht auf Metachromatische Leukodystrophie. 
 
Eine Krankheit, bei der Kinder alles verlieren: 

Fähigkeiten. Bewegungen. 

Sehen. Hören. 

Am Ende sich selbst. 
 
Ich konnte Liv tagelang nicht ansehen. 

Ich hatte Angst davor, sie anzuschauen 

und mit dem Wissen konfrontiert zu sein, 

dass sie Stück für Stück verschwinden könnte. 
 
Diese Diagnose bestätigte sich nicht. 

Es war der schönste Tag unseres Lebens. 
 
Doch das Glück hielt nicht lange. 
 
Dezember 2024 – Die Diagnose, die niemand kennt 
 
Im Dezember 2024 erhielten wir die endgültige Diagnose: 

TBCK-Syndrom. 
 
Eine extrem seltene genetische Erkrankung, 

über die kaum ein Arzt etwas weiß. 

Liv hat die schlimmste Mutation, 

die Form, bei der Kinder oft nur das Jugendalter erreichen – 

wenn sie Glück haben. 
 
Ein Satz, der das Herz einer Mutter in tausend Teile zerreißt. 
 
Die Wahrheit, die ich selbst herausgefunden habe 
 
Etwas ließ mir nie Ruhe. 

Ich beobachtete jeden Anfall. 

Jede Bewegung. 

Jeden Atemzug. 
 
Und irgendwann sah ich, was niemand zuvor erkannt hatte: 
 
Livs Anfälle sind keine Epilepsie. 

Liv krampft, weil sie aufhört zu atmen. 

Es sind Sauerstoffmangel-Krämpfe. 
 
Kein Arzt hat es erkannt. 

Aber ich als Mutter schon. 
 
Wir setzten die Medikamente ab – 

und Liv kam zurück. 
 
Wacher. Klarer. Lebendiger. 

Sie war wieder sie selbst. 
 
Und da wurde mir klar: 

Dieses Kind kämpft. 

Sie will leben. 

Unbedingt. 
 
Die Realität in Deutschland – und die Angst, die uns auffrisst 
 
Die Wahrheit ist erschütternd: 
 
Niemand in Deutschland kann uns sagen, warum Liv Atemstillstände hat. 
 
Niemand weiß: 
 
ob es aus dem Hirnstamm kommt 
 
ob es durch TBCK verursacht wird 
 
ob es das Atemzentrum betrifft 
 
ob es die Nervenbahnen sind 
 
oder etwas völlig anderes 
 
Und weil niemand sagen kann, woher es kommt, 

will niemand uns Hilfsmittel verschreiben, 

mit denen ich Liv sicher beatmen könnte. 
 
Ich warte auf einen Termin in einer Spezialklinik – 

doch bis dahin werde ich allein gelassen 

mit Livs Atemstillständen 

und der ständigen Angst, 

dass der nächste der sein könnte, 

bei dem sie nicht wieder zurückkommt. 
 
Ich habe Liv bereits selbst beatmet. 

Mit meinen eigenen Händen. 

Mit meiner Panik. 

Mit meiner Hoffnung. 

Weil sonst niemand da war. 
 
Das ist unsere Realität. 

Unser Alltag. 

Unser Albtraum. 
 
Wie Liv ist, wenn man die Krankheit einen Moment vergisst 
 
Wenn wir die Krankheit einmal loslassen 

und nur Liv sehen, 

dann ist sie ein fröhliches, albernes, glückliches Kind. 
 
Ein Mädchen, das jeden mit ihrem Lachen ansteckt. 

Ein Kind, das laute Musik liebt – je lauter, desto besser. 

Ein Kind, das am liebsten bei Papa auf dem Arm tanzt, 

bis beide keine Luft mehr bekommen vor Lachen. 
 
Liv kann nicht sitzen. 

Sie kann nicht laufen. 

Sie kann keine festen Dinge essen. 
 
Aber wenn Liv gesund wäre, 

wäre sie genau das Kind, 

das überall herumrennt, 

alles probiert, 

alles isst, 

und die Welt verschlingt vor Lebensfreude. 
 
Trotz all ihrer Einschränkungen 

ist sie diejenige, die uns Kraft schenkt. 

Nicht wir ihr. 
 
Sie liebt ihre kleine Schwester, 

die sie behandelt wie jedes andere Kind: 

ohne Rücksicht, ohne Schonung, ohne Angst. 

Liv wird genauso geärgert, 

ihr werden genauso Spielsachen geklaut, und sie beschwert sich genauso laut wie ihre Schwestern. 
 
Und Liv liebt Tiere über alles. 

Wenn sie ein Pony streichelt 

oder eine Ziege berührt, 

bekommt sie für ein paar kostbare Sekunden 

eine Körperspannung, 

die sie wirken lässt wie ein ganz normales gesundes Kind. 
 
Das ist Liv. 

Nicht TBCK. 

Nicht die Atemstillstände. 

Nicht die Angst. 
 
Liv ist Freude. 

Liv ist Liebe. 

Liv ist Leben. 
 
Warum wir nach Philadelphia müssen 
 
In Deutschland gibt es niemanden, der TBCK wirklich versteht. 

Niemanden, der uns sagen kann, wie wir Liv schützen können. 
 
Die einzigen Experten weltweit sitzen im:

The Moment Our Life Stood Still
 
Imagine a newborn baby.

Warm. Soft. Born healthy.

You hold her in your arms and believe that nothing could ever happen to her.
 
At Liv’s U3 check-up, our pediatrician suddenly heard an unusual heart murmur.

He became quiet, put the stethoscope back on her chest, and looked at us seriously.

He didn’t say much — but he immediately referred us to a cardiologist.
 
Just a few hours later, we were sitting with the cardiologist.

He examined Liv, performed an echocardiogram, and then said the sentence

that split our lives in two:
 
“Your baby has a severe congenital heart defect.”
 
Liv was only a few weeks old.
 
At seven weeks of age, she lay on an operating table for the first time,

her chest opened for open-heart surgery.

At nine months old, she underwent her second open-heart surgery.
 
Back then, I thought nothing could be worse than this.

That this fear was the maximum a parent’s heart could endure.
 
Today I know:

that was only the beginning.

The First Seizure — and the Suspicion That Breaks Every Mother
 
Then came the first seizure.

Unexpected. Violent. Terrifying.

A moment when you truly believe: I am losing her now.
 
Liv was immediately placed on anti-epileptic medication.

For two and a half years, she was heavily sedated,

barely present even in everyday life.
 
And while we were trying to survive this daily reality,

another diagnosis tore the ground out from beneath our feet:
 
Suspected Metachromatic Leukodystrophy.
 
A disease in which children lose everything:

their abilities, their movement,

their vision, their hearing —

and eventually themselves.
 
For days, I couldn’t look at Liv.

I was afraid to face her

and the knowledge

that she might slowly disappear piece by piece.
 
This diagnosis was later ruled out.

It was the happiest day of our lives.
 
But the happiness did not last.

December 2024 — The Diagnosis No One Knows
 
In December 2024, we received the final diagnosis:
 
TBCK syndrome.
 
An extremely rare genetic disorder

that almost no doctor knows.

Liv has the most severe known mutation —

the form in which children often only reach adolescence,

if they are lucky.
 
A sentence that shatters a mother’s heart into a thousand pieces.

The Truth I Discovered Myself
 
Something never let me rest.

I watched every seizure.

Every movement.

Every breath.
 
And at some point, I saw what no one else had recognized before:
 
Liv’s seizures are not epilepsy.

Liv seizes because she stops breathing.

They are hypoxia-induced seizures.
 
No doctor recognized it.

But I did — as her mother.
 
We discontinued the medication —

and Liv came back.
 
More alert.

Clearer.

More alive.
 
She was herself again.
 
And that’s when I realized:

this child is fighting.

She wants to live.

Desperately.

The Reality in Germany — and the Fear That Consumes Us
 
The truth is devastating:
 
No one in Germany can tell us why Liv has episodes of apnea.

No one knows:
 
whether it originates in the brainstem
 
whether it is caused by TBCK
 
whether it affects the respiratory center
 
whether it involves the neural pathways
 
or something entirely different
 
And because no one can identify the cause,

no one wants to prescribe the medical equipment

that would allow me to safely ventilate Liv.
 
I am waiting for an appointment at a specialized clinic —

but until then, I am left alone

with Liv’s breathing pauses

and the constant fear

that the next one might be the one

she doesn’t come back from.
 
I have already ventilated Liv myself.

With my own hands.

With my panic.

With my hope.

Because no one else was there.
 
This is our reality.

Our everyday life.

Our nightmare.

Who Liv Is — When You Forget the Illness for a Moment
 
When we let go of the illness

and just see Liv,

she is a happy, silly, joyful child.
 
A little girl whose laughter is contagious.

A child who loves loud music — the louder, the better.

A child who loves to dance in her dad’s arms

until they are both breathless with laughter.
 
Liv cannot sit.

She cannot walk.

She cannot eat solid food.
 
But if Liv were healthy,

she would be exactly the child

who runs everywhere,

tries everything,

eats everything,

and devours the world with joy.
 
Despite all her limitations,

she is the one who gives us strength —

not the other way around.
 
She loves her little sister,

who treats her like any other child:

without caution, without gentleness, without fear.

Liv gets teased just the same,

has her toys taken away just the same,

and complains just as loudly as her sisters.
 
And Liv loves animals more than anything.

When she pets a pony

or touches a goat,

for a few precious seconds

she gains a body tension

that makes her look like a completely healthy child.
 
That is Liv.

Not TBCK.

Not the breathing pauses.

Not the fear.
 
Liv is joy.

Liv is love.

Liv is life.

Why We Must Go to Philadelphia
 
There is no one in Germany who truly understands TBCK.

No one who can tell us how to protect Liv.
 
The only experts worldwide are at:
