Little Maya's Journey

Hi Everyone, I started this page for my friend Stacy.  Stacy's daughter, Maya, was diagnosed with Leukemia on 2/20/14.

Here is a message from Stacy (Maya's Mother) :
As of 2/20/14 our 10 month old daughter was taken into the ER for unexplained bruising and fevers. She had dangerously low platelets, moderately low iron, and high white blood cells. She was diagnosed with Leukemia. Unsure of what type it was or how to treat, we were admitted into the PICU for close monitoring. In the morning at 6AM, we were given a platelet transfusion, and then at 9:30AM Maya was put under for a lumbar puncture, administration of chemo therapy into her spinal fluid, and a bone marrow biopsy. The results of these diagnostics were both good and bad! The good news is that Maya has no leukemia in the spine currently. The chemo ended up being preventative. The bad news is that though she has one of the most common types of leukemia, Acute Lymphoblast Leukemia (ALL), it was the less common version affecting the T cells rather than the B cells. More good news is, regardless of B or T cells, at Maya's age in her infancy, the treatments would be the same. She currently is taking steroids three times a day to kill lymphocyte cells. She is also taking Allopurinol to flush any dead cells into the urine so that no stones are formed. She is battling fevers ranging from low grade to 103. She will have blood work very often (three times a day), to check all levels. As of this afternoon, she was low on hemoglobin and ended up needing a blood transfusion. This will not be uncommon during her treatment. Coming up soon, Monday will be when she first has an ultrasound of her heart as a baseline for future diagnostics. This is also called an echo. After, she will be undergoing surgery to insert a med-port. This med-port will be attached very close to the heart, so that the chemo therapy is whisked away as quick as possible into other parts of the body, without harming surrounding tissue drastically. We have a meeting with the team of doctors on Monday as well, and will be starting an intense treatment of chemotherapy starting Friday. Our projected release date is currently 4 weeks from now, if all goes well. As my new social worker says, "Everything is always written in pencil.
