Little Lexi's Fight for Life

Imagine choosing to get pet insurance for your four-legged family member so that you never have to make a life or death decision based on how much money is in your bank account.

Month after month, you pay your premium.

Night after night, you can rest a little easier, because you know that no matter what happens, your pet will be safe.

Sounds pretty simple, right?

Unfortunately, for my best friends Heather and Kenji - it really wasn’t quite that simple.

Shortly after they brought their beloved puppy Lexi home, they signed up for pet insurance to make sure that they would never be faced with a tough decision based on finances.

Lexi is so full of love, very playful, and if you’ve ever spent any time with Heather and Kenji since they’ve become pet-parents, then you know that this little girl is the light of both of their lives.

This past spring, when Lexi was just a little over a year old, she had her first seizure. Up until this point, she was always happy, healthy and full of energy.

They rushed her to the emergency vet clinic, where they ran blood work. She then went to her regular vet, where they began the process of trying to figure out what was wrong with her. She had an ultrasound done, more blood tests, urine tests - all trying to pinpoint exactly what was wrong with her - yet all diagnostic testing came back with no indication of what was actually wrong.

Through this whole process, their insurance covered all their bills. They were so relieved and grateful that they had the forethought to get insurance for Lexi when she was a puppy.

Then, just a few weeks later, Lexi had another seizure - but this time it wouldn’t stop. They drove to the closest emergency vet clinic - and the clinic couldn’t get her seizures to stop. They recommended they take her a few hours away, to a larger facility where she could get help.

By the time they arrived, Lexi had been seizing for 4 hours. While the vets were able to get the seizure to stop, the next day she went into decompensated liver failure. At this point, the vets were not sure if they’d even be able to get Lexi through the liver failure - and after some very emotional conversations, Heather and Kenji decided that they would have the vet do whatever they could to save her - after all they had insurance.

Lexi would spend the next week in doggy ICU - with a feeding tube, IV fluids, meds, blood transfusions. And while she was able to pull through and go home the following week, the journey seems like it was only just beginning.

Shortly after submitting the $10,000 claim for Lexi’s ICU trip, Trupanion, their insurance provider, decided that they’ve changed their mind and they are no longer covering Lexi’s expenses. They’ve appealed their claim, with their vet supporting them, and backing them up to the insurance company - yet, their appeal was again denied.

Days after learning of their denied appeal, Lexi took another really bad seizure and had to be rushed to emergency in Halifax. Their vet is pushing to have Lexi go to a bigger vet facility in PEI for more extensive testing so they can find out what is wrong with her so she can be properly treated. Her vet says that if she gets these tests done, they can save her life and she will be able to go on for years and live a regular, happy life.

As a friend it’s been incredibly painful to watch 2 of the closest people in my life go through so much pain over the past few months. Watching them try to decide what price tag they can put on their furry family member.

Heather has dedicated her life to improving the lives of others through her nursing profession - always being there for those around her that need a helping hand, need someone to talk to, or just need a good laugh.

Kenji has always been the kind of guy who, no matter what he has going on, if you need help with anything, he’ll drop whatever he’s doing to help out a friend.

I can’t really remember a time where either of them have asked for anything in return, and now is the time that we can all band together to help the two people who have always been there for everyone else in their lives.

The goal of this Go Fund Me campaign is to raise the $10,000 to cover Lexi’s original expenses that Insurance decided not to cover, and $5,000 for the diagnostic testing needed so they can save Lexi’s life.

Whatever you can give to help Lexi, even if it is just $5, please know that it all goes a long way and we are extremely grateful for your support.

Thank you all in advance for taking the time to read about Lexi’s story and for your generous donations - we truly can’t thank you enough.

I completely understand that not everyone may be in a position to donate, and that is completely ok - we just ask that you take a moment to send some positive thoughts or prayers to Lexi so that she can pull through this, and if you could also take a moment to share this with another dog lover, we would be eternally grateful.
