Two years ago I created Literaryswag, the intersection between fashion and literature to make books more accesible to people who don't like to read.
This began with the Literaryswag Competition, an annual contest in which I awarded the person who posted the most pictures of people reading on social media a cash prize and a book of their choice. Four runner-ups also recieved books of their choices as well.
In 2014, the cash prize was $1,000. Last year, 2015, the prize was $1,500. Both prizes, and the books, were funded by my student loans and I did that because when you give it everything you have--or what you can afford lol.
Since then my investment has paid off. Literaryswag has grown into more than just an annual competition. It's become a cultural movement. Buzzfeed, Huffington Post, Man Repeller, and The Sunday Times in London have all done stories on it. I've been able to interview hundreds of writers about their "Literaryswag." I even host a monthly book club that's open to the public to engage as many readers as I can.
This year I wanted to add to the growth and reach of Literaryswag by hosting a Literaryswag BBQ!!! There will be food. There will be music and it'll just be a good time for anyone who's looking to kick back and chill. It will also serve as the event for the crowning of this year's Literaryswag Competition!
The $2,500 that I'm raising is for food, drinks, and other miscellaneous items that make a BBQ work--at no cost to the attendees.
Some day I'll be able to fund these shindigs on my own but until then help a brother out lol.
The BBQ will take place Sunday, September 18th, 12-6pm in Cadman Plaza Park and will be open to anyone who wants to have a good time. It will also occur during the Brooklyn Book Festival, so if you happen to find yourself hungry, thirsty and want some good vibes, come through and get yourself a plate.
