Literacy and Math Resources

Donation protected
I teach an incredible crew of kindergarteners that are so excited to learn every day and have an incredibly positive and sunny attitude towards life and learning. Unfortunately, teaching in a high poverty area means that resources are very hard to come by that would be readily available in other areas. East Chicago has been undergoing a lead crisis for some time now, which has had devastating effects on the community from displaced housing, to learning difficulties in many students. In order to reach my goal of 1.5 years of growth in reading and math for my crew, I am fundraising to purchase numerous supplies, activities, and texts that will enrich my classroom and bring even more excitement to every day of learning for my crew.

The following are the items I am requesting:
Literacy:
Bob readers for independent reading time and RAZ - Kids computer app: Children from High-Poverty areas will have heard and read on average 30 million words less that students from other areas. Having both of these resources available during our independent time allows my kids to have a much richer literary experience every day and allows them to have books tailored to exactly their level.

Heggerty Phonics: Phonemic awareness, or the ability to hear and manipulate sounds in words without the printed text, is the #1 predictor of reading success at the primary level. Unfortunately, a large number of my students came in to my class unprepared to access grade level activites. This book will help my struggling students catch up and become successful readers!

Writing Journals: My students are beginning to explore the writing process and these journals will help them stay organized with their writing and have special lined paper to help them with their penmanship.

Paper Cutter and Document Camera: These two resources will help me prepare quicker for lessons and add even more instructional time in the day.

Flexibile Classroom Seating: I use the Daily 5 literacy model, which allows for maximum time spent reading to self and to others daily. I would love to be able to have more inviting spaces to have in my classroom for my crew to start falling in love with reading.

Technology: Having Tablets would be so incredible for my students to use the RAZ-kids program to listen to reading in a more comfortable spot.

Math Resources: Rekenreks, Tangrams, 3D foam shapes, Snap and Slide Number Bonds, 10 Frame boards, Sorting activities, Number lines, Place Value Activity kit.

These math resources will enrich my student's early numeracy skills and make math instruction much more hands on and engaging, building much more solid foundations in my students's success.
