Lisa's Child Nursing in Sri Lanka

Donation protected
Hello everyone! Thank you so much for visiting my page. My names Lisa and I’m currently studying at the University of Huddersfield to be a Children’s nurse. I am so passionate about caring for children and I’ve absolutely loved every minute of the journey so far!

I had been out of education for some time prior to starting university, so I undertook my access to healthcare course through the distance learning centre while working full time as a domestic assistant on a children’s ward.  During this time I also volunteered on the ward to help me gain extra experience of working with sick children and working alongside amazing paediatric nurses further cemented that this was the career I was meant for! Luckily all my hard work paid off and I began my degree in September 2016.

I have decided to undertake a nursing elective abroad in Sri Lanka with Work the World. I will be going in July 2018 where i will spend 3 weeks working in a hospital and 1 week living in village learning about traditional medicines.  One-third of children in Sri Lanka suffer with malnutrition, this has a significant impact on a child’s growth, development and quality of life. I cannot wait to help the children in Sri Lanka and hope the training I have received in the UK will help me provide them with the best care. I am interested to see the variety of different conditions such as malaria, tuberculosis, dengue, HIV and the way they are treated outside of our NHS. The experience will be an invaluable learning opportunity that will have a positive influence on the nurse I will become.

Who is Work the World? Work the World is a reputable, safe and reliable organisation recommended by universities worldwide, that offers healthcare students tailor made electives. One of the reasons I have chosen them is that they employ local people to run the programmes, purchase products and food from the communities in which they’re based and aim to ensure there is no negative impact to developing countries.

While it is an amazing opportunity it is something I need to fund myself and I am hoping to raise as much money towards the cost as I can. I will be organising cake sales, coffee mornings and other fundraising activities. I don’t expect to raise the full £4000 needed but any towards will help. The money I aim to raise will cover costs for

·         Flights

·         3 week hospital placement

·         1 week   Ayurvedic village healthcare experience

·         Private, fully catered and secure accommodation

·         Tailored paediatric placement experience

·         Visas

·         Travel/indemnity insurance

This is a once in a lifetime experience and every little helps no matter how small. Thank you for the taking the time to read this, please spread the word!

Thank you

Lisa
