Brain Tumor To Science Adventure

Be a Part of a Quest to Transform an encroaching Brain Tumor into a Powerful Science Adventure:

Are you the type to want to be a part of something BIG?

Yeah?  So is my sister!   Lisa Dettloff!

She’s always known that humans have the capacity to squelch the flames of possibility in kids, or, to fan those flames and help them to burn brightly and contribute to the betterment of mankind!

 She’s chosen the latter.

Lisa has been on a Quest, since the age of 17, to fan the flames of scientific and intellectual curiosity in children.  She has taught amazing, imaginative hands-on-science through UC Berkeley, schools in Silicon Valley and northern California, and in remote villages of Guatemala and Nepal.

However, that Quest has now taken a detour:

On November 4th, Lisa was rushed to the hospital ICU with a seizure, and after surgery and pathology analysis, was given a diagnosis of brain cancer (Stage 3 IDH1 wild type Anaplastic Astrocytoma)!

THIS is kind of a bump in the road!

It’s slowed her down quite a bit.

Caused her pain.

Caused seizures.

Caused temporary memory loss and cognitive issues.

This obnoxious tumor has caused my strong, athletic and brilliant sister to lose all feeling on one side (runs on the beach & dancing are on hold for now… but she’s moving towards fixing that!).

It’s costing a lot of money through medical bills and lost wages!
The cancer encroaching on her brain was trying to beat her down, but she’s strong, she’s persistent… and she’s fighting back!
First, through awake brain surgery (kind of cool, kind of scary… but it couldn’t get most of the tumor out).  She got to wake up and read flash cards while her brain was open, in order to see where it was safe to cut out the tumor!

Then, Radiation at the hospital 5 times a week for 6 weeks.

Finally, Chemotherapy (ugghh!) every day…

The physical and cognitive challenges have been extreme!

Unable to teach and temporarily diverted from her brilliant development of science curriculum…

 It’s taken a toll.

As you can imagine, this is causing some serious challenges.  Not only the physical setbacks from the tumor, but also some pretty intimidating financial problems.  Medical bills.  Lost Wages.  Yet-unknown-costs-for-future treatments.

This is why I’m reaching out for help.

To ask you to be a part of this new quest:  Can you please donate $5, or $75 or $375 or more if you have it?
To help out Lisa, and to help out those she will continue to inspire through science??

Lisa is one of those people who's impact on this world is undeniably far-reaching!

Not only has Lisa been my rock, and helped me to see beyond the imaginary confines of my life’s circumstances,
she’s done this for 100’s of adults as a volunteer counselor of sorts.

And then of course, there’s those 1000’s and 1000’s of kids!

She’s been passionate about learning (starting with astronomy and physics) and teaching (most of the hard sciences) since she was very young.

Doing this through Hands-On Science Experiments have always been the core of her career; developing the keys to making science skills fascinating and fun!

With this new obstacle (the obnoxious tumor), continuing this passion has become so much stronger, and has morphed into an unexpected adventure in learning and teaching about the brain!

It is providing an incredible opportunity to understand the neurology and the brain in a completely new way.

Lisa has been struggling with the physical, but her brain has been in a hyper-focused state and getting a lot done.

There’s a strong energy moving in where the surgery cutting happened, where nerve connections were broken…  And now, some new ones are being created: rewired pathways of brain connections and new ways of thinking.

As that recreated wiring happens, Lisa can see that she can make choices in how to re-grow her brain’s power to understand the world, and to understand science.

These broken functions, and that obnoxious tumor, are actually turning into an opportunity.

An opportunity not only in how she approaches her life, but also in how she teaches.

It’s kind of reminiscent of a sci-fi movie where an electronic brain is added to the human brain to affect its functioning.

And, it is so cool to WATCH it happening.

By taking careful note of what she’s learning through this medical adventure, she’s documenting the journey through her blog,

 And so, her Quest is evolving in powerful new directions… in addition to providing as much extraordinary hands-on science teaching as she is physically able to;
She is moving towards combining her experience of the 100’s of cool interactive hands-on science experiments and evolving her teaching model.

Adding to her only-teaching-a-few-students-at-a-time model, she is starting to develop an online version that teaches millions-of-kids-at-a-time.

She will be creating an interactive, online digital vehicle through which kids can not only conduct experiments, but also analyze and learn from the results in a cool and fun way!   This online program would use interactive simulations, videos of hands-on experiments and a rich supply of lab sheets, diagrams, online discussions and other digital tools.

‘Want to be a part of this cool quest, and be a part of something Big?

Please chip in a few dollars (or whatever you can)!

By doing so, you’re helping Lisa with:

 ·         Unreimbursed Medical Costs
·         Lost Work Time
·         Physical Labor Support for Hands-on Science         Teaching
·         Healing Treatments
·         Cost to Develop Online Curriculum Approach

You’ll also be helping her to turn this life-changing-obstacle into a life-changing opportunity!
This is an opportunity for herself, for the millions of kids who will benefit from the super-cool fascinating-and-fun and very-effective online science experience, and an opportunity for you to feel proud of how you played a crucial role in helping to transform this brain tumor into a Powerful Science Adventure!

 Thank you!!!!!!
