George to Maputo Afro Swing

Me

My name is Okurut George and I have been given the opportunity to go to Maputo Afro Swing Exchange of 2019. This will be the second time I go to this exchange (or any exchange for that matter). Last year I got the opportunity, via the Frankie Manning Foundation, to go for the first time. That experience had a great impact on me and also became the starting point for Lindy Hop in my country, Uganda. Since last year's exchange I have devoted all time possible to spread Lindy Hop in the local communities around Kampala.

Lindy Hop in Uganda

By far the most beneficial part of this trip will be to pass on my experience and knowledge to the people in Uganda.

Local projects vary between how to widen the lindy hop community in Uganda to using the dance at community based projects that focus on building footpaths around a village. The students that I have had so far have never heard of the Lindy Hop before they come to class but when they start to feel the music and start dancing to it you can see how much happiness and joy it brings them. I work both with adults and with kids projects, since I think people of any age can benefit from it! To connect to people via Lindy Hop allows me to become a part of local communities and hopefully have a positive lasting impact on peoples lives.

Why I need help

I started up teaching Lindy Hop in Uganda but since I am the only one (and with very limited knowledge of the dance), I can only go so far in my teaching. I lack a lot of experience but am very eager to learn. Through attending the Maputo Afro Swing Exchange I will gain more knowledge to pass on to my students. It will also create a platform for exchange between Mozambique and Uganda and help swing dance grow bigger and spread to more places around the world.

The fundraising

The trip is not far in the future but it will come around very quickly, more exactly March 2019, which is why I need all the help I can get with fundraising for this opportunity. I have got a part time job with most of the money now going towards this.

These funds will help me to cover my flight tickets and feedings during my stay in Mozambique.

I will be very grateful if I can manage to get the entire fund before the end of this year, since I need to start my VISA aplication process early.

If you are able to donate even the smallest amount I would be extremely grateful as it is going towards a trip of a lifetime.

Thank you !
