Lindsay's New Ride

Donation protected
UPDATE:  God is good!!  Walt and Tracy have had an amazing encounter and blessing, and located a vehicle that is totally within their budget and meets their needs!  At their request, we have lowered the goal amount to $8,000.  See Walt's story below!!

After looking at hundreds of wheelchair accessible vehicles in the last week, God opened a door and delivered us a vehicle at an amazing price that we could not have even dreamed of a week ago. Through the massive social media contacts and everybody searching for a van, we were put in touch with a couple living west of Chicago, Illinois. They had a wheelchair vehicle called an MV-1 2012 Model for sale--what is amazing is that this couple in many ways are just like Tracy and I--they have a young 14 year old son with SMA type 1 and another son not affected who is 17. As God opened the doors and brought us together, it became clear to both this family and our family that they had the vehicle Lindsay needed. For the first time in her life, Lindsay will get to ride up front as an adult passenger and see out of the windows--the vehicle has all of the handicap accessible requirements for Lindsay and what we need to travel with on long trips. Amazingly, this family who understands how hard it is to find affordable vehicles made the purchase price of this 2012 MV-1 in a range that we could afford with a little help. The $20,000 dollars we were told we would need for the modifications to get a decent vehicle that would last us a while and not put us upside down on a car loan evaporated before our very eyes, as this family reached out and offered is a vehicle with 13,000 miles on it (basically brand new) and would give Lindsay a chance to ride upfront with friends as she moves into high school. Not only are we so very grateful for the generosity of this family, but also of the many of you who have helped. What seemed to be an impossible goal to reach is now a reality as we attempt to do our very best to be good stewards of your generosity. Tracy will still be able to keep the flexible schedule she has to help with Lindsay (which is a full time job itself--especially when Lindsay gets sick). Our plan is to complete the purchase of this vehicle in the next few weeks and travel via Amtrak to the Chicago area to drive it back. Our hope is to raise $8000.00 rather than $20,000 to cover enough of the purchase to allow Tracy to continue with a flexible work schedule. Thank you so much and here is a picture of Lindsay's new ride!!!

ORIGINAL STORY:
Meet my friend Lindsay Cochran...she is one of the bravest people I know.  She and her family are some of the best people I've been blessed  to have as a part of my life!
THE NEED

This past week the Cochran family found out that their wheelchair van they purchased in 2007 was no longer a viable and safe vehicle to transport their daughter Lindsay Cochran, who has Spinal Muscular Atrophy.  A wheelchair van is Lindsay’s only method to get out of the home to church and other activities around our community.

A local Chrysler dealership managed to get the van to a point that it can run, but the van is running on borrowed time and the Cochran’s were told that they must purchase a new wheelchair van for Lindsay as this van is no longer a reliable and safe means transportation.  Without a wheelchair van, Lindsay is essentially homebound.

THE COST

Wheelchair conversion vans are quite expensive as the conversion to a wheelchair van often runs between $17,000-22,000 dollars.  The Cochran’s are looking at used wheelchair vans as new wheelchair vans cost upwards to $65,000-$70,000 dollars.  Ideally, I would like to raise at least $20,000 to help the Cochran family at least cover the cost of the conversion (making a regular mini-van wheelchair accessible), as even a good used van will likely cost between $30,000-40,000 dollars.

The Cochrans have looked into Medicaid funding, but unfortunately, the waiver that Lindsay is on  does not cover wheelchair van conversions.

How you can help?  Make a donation here to help finance this purchase!  Share their story with your friends and family.  One thing I know for sure is that the family of God is wide-spread but close-knit.  We don't have to know each other to help cover each others' needs!  Give if you can, and most certainly join me in prayer that God will provide for this precious family's needs in an exceedingly abundant way!

Thanks for your consideration!
