Lillian’s Road to Recovery

For anyone who knows my mom Lillian, knows what a wonderful person she is. She has been a waitress for many years and has quite the following of regulars who have loved to come and see her. Not to mention all the gossip they get to hear about her kids! Lillian is definitely loved by many.
Earlier this year my mom started having issues with her right foot and started seeing a doctor weekly for treatments. Being the hardworking individual she is, she continued to work as a waitress through the daily pain caused by the wound that had developed. Eventually the pain medication she had been taking just to get through work caught up with her and caused ulcers and internal bleeding in her stomach. This event landed her in the ICU where she received multiple blood transfusions to help replenish what she had lost. A few days after leaving the hospital she noticed her foot was red and inflamed and back to the ER she went. It turned out that she had acquired STAPH infection during the previous stay. This required multiple rounds of antibiotics and a skin graft surgery to the right foot, as well as stents to arteries in her leg in hopes of improving the blood flow to the fresh surgical site. She was discharged after 12 days and retreated home to heal.
About a week ago the wound on her foot took a turn for the worse and the skin around it started to die. She went under again for yet another surgery, this time to harvest a vein from her left leg and use it in her right leg in a last-ditch effort to get as much blood flow as possible to the dying wound. She made it another week at home before ending up in the ER again earlier this week. The ulcer on her foot is not healing and with much consideration with the doctors and our family, it has been decided that it is going to be best to amputate her big toe and some of the foot around it. To say it has been a long and emotional road of hope and disappointment is an understatement. We are all staying positive for my mom but this is going to be a huge adjustment for her and my family.
My mom has not been able to work for the past couple months and the chances of her ever being able to return are very small. She is going to have to learn to walk again with the use of a prosthetic and will have to adjust to this new normal. The financial hardship has been taking its toll and medical equipment is expensive.
Lillian has never been one to ask for anything and we have made it through this journey thus far as a family. I have thought about this fundraiser a lot and have finally decided it’s time to give it a try. Any donation, no matter how big or small means the world to us and we are appreciative of all the support.
