Lillian's New Normal

Our dearest mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend broke her hip May 8th, on her 90th birthday while visiting family in Florida. Due to her age the surgeon said a hip replacement was not an option. He placed a pin in her hip connected to a rod that went down her femur. All of this occurred a week before she was moving to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to finish off her amazing journey on earth at a lovely assistant living facility called Freighter View.
Lillian will need approximately 6 - 8 weeks of rehabilitation. Medicaid will cover 100% of 21 days. After that there is a fee of $167.50 a day that will have to be paid by Lillian. She’s already been there 2 weeks and her progress is not nearly enough to even get her up and out of bed/wheelchair to use a walker without 2 aids. It looks like she will need the full 8 weeks if not more to make every effort to be mobile. This cost could amount to $6,500 out of pocket expenses just for her rehabilitation. There will be medical bills to pay as she does not have supplemental insurance. After Medicare she will owe up to 20% of remaining bills due. Medical procedures and hospital stays are expensive.
Lillian has been stepping down further into dementia the past year. Dementia has been her “New Normal” for several years now. It was decided by her family that she was no longer safe in her home in Tennessee with her companion Joe. Joe is also stepping down in dementia and can no longer care for her. She was removed from her home in mid-April and has since visited family in W.V and Florida.
New Normal Definition - Something which was previously abnormal has become commonplace.
Lillian has always insisted she wanted to keep her independence. Living with Jesse, her husband and raising 11 children proved her to be a strong, independent, wonderful, loving and special woman. We, her children, have made decisions and put into place a plan that would give our dearest mother all that she desires and deserves. Ending her last years in dignity, with respect, independent of her children (as much as possible) and lots and lots of love and excellent care are important to her mental, physical and spiritual health. At Freighter View she will be surrounded by her daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren on a daily basis. Her family and social time with other humans is essential to her daily happiness and joy.
Freighter View Asst. Living is a 41 bed facility that is nestled in Sault Ste. Marie, MI. It is fairly new, super clean, pleasantly decorated and well equipped with amazing educated and talented staff. They are equipped for continuing care, to help Lillian live the fullest and most satisfying remainder of her life. The cost for Freighter View is below the national average for a continuing care program. With that being said, the cost exceeds Lillian’s social security check by several thousand dollars a month. Now because of Lillian’s hip fracture the cost will even be more. Jesse, her amazing husband is a veteran so she will get supplemental help. The additional money we were hoping she needed from her savings and help from us, her children will not be enough to cover all of her expenses.
This woman of God has blessed so many people in her life. 90 immediate family members including her 11 children and their spouses, 37 grandchildren and their spouses and soon to be 27 great grandchildren. She has mentored many other woman, counseled young newly married couples and brought into her home those in need of a place to stay and unconditional love. She has given of her time, money and self generously and with great love and sacrifice all her life.
We are asking you, her family and her friends to please help your grandmother, great grandmother and friend to live the rest of her life without worry and hardship all with great care that she so deserves. Your prayers and financial contribution will help ensure her protection, safety and guarantee peace and joy during her "New Normal" remaining years.
God willing she lives through all of this but if for any reason she is called home to be with her Jesus and loved ones in heaven the funds will go towards her funeral. If any remains it will go to the Alzheimer’s Association. (see below)
