Lillemor is a short drama film with experimental elements, situated in rural Victoria, it depicts, Lillemor, a 26 year old young woman, consumed by motherhood. She runs away from her oppressed identity, only to find out she’s in fact running towards it.

This film is about a person, becoming a mother when she’s ready. In her own way.

If you are a local business or individual that can help in any way it would be immensely appreciated.

Who am I?
My name is Grace McLean and I am a 26 year old, mother of 2 from Bendigo. I completed my Bachelor of Film and Digital media at Deakin University Melbourne in 2018/19, while pregnant with my 1st child. I enrolled into the Deakin Film, TV and Animation Honours course at the beginning of this year, in hospital, 3 days after giving birth to my 2nd child. So 7 months down the track I have a 7 month old, a 2 year old and a short film script that explores motherhood identity.
I entered this honours degree in search to explore how mothers are being represented in Australian Cinema and to explore why there is a lack of mothers as the central character. My journey into motherhood was sudden and unplanned, it made me view the world from a different perspective and drove my innate curiosity to how mothers are portrayed in film.
This short film is a direct reflection of my identity and a chapter into my life of becoming a mother and my creative choices in this film are a result from my research of how mothers have been portrayed in past films and how I would like to ‘change the narrative’ of this gap of mother protagonists as complex human beings, exploring the complexity of their individuality.

What do I hope to achieve?
This film has come from an extremely personal place, This topic is universal and is relatable. This films themes touch on post partum depression, Post partum anxiety, the 4th trimester reality, the transition from individual to mother, the power of a supportive network, the necessity of support in motherhood, the isolation of motherhood, it highlights the depth of motherhood, shows the reality and struggles that correlate when becoming a mother, but it also shows the beauty, the sisterhood, the loving relationship between mother and children. This is not a film that can be labelled to one aspect of motherhood, it is a film that will encapsulate audiences to bring there own personal circumstances and experiences to create an audience connective response. This film is a window into a chapter of my life that was a difficult time that fortunately through a Pandemic I have been able to remotely continue my studies; I have found myself again. Through my support network I have managed to find time while raising 2 children to create a piece of art that incorporates the struggles and beauty of what motherhood is and I hope it encapsulate in this film.

This is for the mothers who don’t have support.
This is for the mothers who feel like they’ve lost themselves.
This is for the mothers who feel like they’ve had to put their life on pause or on hold for bearing children.
The mothers who have lost their sense of self.
The mothers who are struggling with their new identity.
The mothers consumed by motherhood.

We see you, we hear you, we believe you.
