Peru Trip to Study Natural Medicine

Hello!
My name is Lila Kaye and I am determined to go to Peru this winter to learn from traditional healers about how botanic and natural resources can be used to heal the body. The Program takes place over two weeks during my university's winter break and is organized through Linguistic Horizons (http://www.linguistichorizons.com/nutritionperu/ if you want to check it out!)
I am a Junior at the University of Oregon studying cellular and molecular biology. I am a researcher in a lab investigating how residential/commensal bacteria that live in the intestine can benefit the host's health (Check out our page http://molbio.uoregon.edu/guillemin/ ). I am passionate about learning how we can stay happy and healthy by interacting positively with our natural world. Going to Peru to learn from medicine men and women who are still connected to the powers and bounty of their natural land is another way to understand how people can interact with our magical world for a better life. I love my research life, but I know I need to get out of behind the desk, out of my country, and out of my comfort zone if I want my education to mean something.
I speak semi-fluent Spanish but haven't been in an immersive setting in years. Going to Peru will put me right in the thick of verbal and spiritual communication and I can’t wait for that. It is so amazing how your mind expands when you speak and act in a different language/culture. I want to re-train my tongue and experience the joys of meeting people from other worlds. I might even get to speak with a shaman on Machu Pichu! We are all a part of this beautiful earth and exploring it together is the best way to Harmony and Progress.
I have to buy a plane ticket that will be upwards of one and half thousand dollars and the program itself costs $2700. Then there’s food and extra expenses like climbing Machu Pichu and bringing gifts to the local peoples that I visit, which I expect will be between $500 and $1000. I have some money to spend on this trip and I know how worthwhile it will be, but I need some help. The more help I get, the more I can get out and give back to this experience. Anything will help, even just five dollars (that’s dinner!). If you donate I will send you a collection of photos and notes on what I learn from my travels (illustrations included), and if you give me your address, I can send you a postcard from Peru!
