Your Yoetzet, Our Story
In 2012 the Jewish families of Greater Philadelphia and South Jersey saw a window open, a short window of a long awaited opportunity to formally hire a Yoetzet Halacha. What started as a brainstorming session between friends, concluded with the founding of the Yoetzet Initiative. We knew that unlike other Jewish communities where Yoatzot are employed by synagogues, our Yoetzet was to be supported directly by lay leaders and community members. In order for our Initiative to fulfill its mission of providing a Yoetzet Halacha to the community, we knew that we needed to build an infrastructure of human capital and financial resources. The YI grew as a grassroots effort of community families seeking to establish this important role in the Greater Philadelphia and South Jersey Jewish communities.

You, Our Partners
Our steering committee was formed by women committed to ensuring the YI's capacity to employ a Yoetzet now and in the future. We had immediate success growing a fund that enabled us to not only pay our Yoetzet’s first annual stipend at the going rate paid by other communities, but we soon had enough funds in the bank to ensure her employability for the second year. In the almost 4 years since its launch, the YI has grown into a community of engaged women at different ages and life stages by providing classes and events on the topics of Taharat Hamishpacha (the laws of Niddah, Mikvah, and family purity), seminars on Health and Jewish law, sexual intimacy and sensitivities surrounding infertility.

A Word About Yoatzot
Women preparing to become Yoatzot Halacha are chosen for their extensive Torah scholarship, leadership ability and deep religious commitment. They devote two years to intensive Talmudic and Halachic study with rabbinic authorities in Taharat Hamishpacha. In addition, they receive training from medical and health professionals. Yoatzot have been operating in many communities in the United States and in Israel for many years with the goal of assisting women who are more comfortable discussing very personal issues with another woman. As female Halachic advisors, the Yoatzot consult with Orthodox Rabbinic authorities when approached with questions which demand a posek’s attention. Our Yoetzet, Your Initiative
Our Yoetzet, Tova Warburg Sinensky , a graduate of Nishmat's first U.S. Yoatzot Halacha Fellowship, offers personal consultations, educates kallot, all while providing invaluable halakhic guidance and support to women throughout Northeast Philadelphia, Cherry Hill NJ, Center City Philadelphia as well as Lower Merion, Pennsylvania. The Initiative's transformative programming includes educational events geared towards women at different stages of life and marriage, teleconferences, and text based shiurim throughout the year and are all designed and implemented by the work of our committee of engaged ambassadors.

Thank you in advance for helping to enrich the lives of so many Jewish families in our community.
