Unfortunately, there is no NHS for animals and veterinary costs have risen dramatically since the pandemic. Sadly one of the consequences of the financial crisis is that many pets are put to sleep because an owner is unable or unwilling to pay for treatment. This was the case for this sweet-natured kitten, Orpheus. Our rescue group was asked to save him and we did. We dont often asked but we have a big bill and would be very grateful for some help.

Orpheus had been in a road accident and was rushed to a local vet practice to be examined. He had been seriously injured. The X-ray revealed he had a fracture to his left humerus. He would need an expensive operation – the estimated cost was £3000. He would need at least six-week post op care. Sadly, his owner couldn’t afford to pay and Orpheus was signed over to be put to sleep.

Thankfully the vet turned to our rescue group Mitzi’s Kitty Corner for help. Faced with the options I had to say yes and agreed that we would cover the cost of treatment and take him into our care. He would receive post-op care in the home of one of our vet-nurse foster mums. His recovery would be slow and his mobility would need to be restricted. Six weeks have now passed and he has just had an x-ray to check that his leg has mended. We are pleased to say that this happy boy has made a great recovery.

We are a small self-funded group of cat lovers with a big heart. We are based in South Devon and have rescued and found loving homes for more than 700 puss cats. We try to cover costs ourselves and rarely appeal for money. But this is a big bill (now received) and we would be very, very grateful for some help.
