Is there one thing in your life that you know that without it, you wouldn’t be the person you are today?

For myself and many others, that one thing is music. I remember the first time I was truly inspired by an orchestra. I was attending a middle school trip to Boston, Massachusetts and saw the Boston Symphony Orchestra play. It started out as quiet as a whisper. Long and monotonous, I didn’t know where the piece was going. But then the piece gradually increased to a powerful roar. I just sat there, trying to keep my jaw from dropping. I was captivated by the violinist’s bows that moved identically. I left knowing that I would always keep music close to me. It seems I never let that little girl down. Today, I am coming full circle. I am pursuing my Master of Arts in Business Design and Arts Leadership at the Savannah College of Art and Design and am an intern at the Minnesota Orchestra.

For my final project, I am planning and executing a classical music concert that also serves as a fundraiser for the Minnesota Orchestra’s Children’s Education Department and local music programs at elementary and middle schools throughout Minneapolis. This concert is for parents, children, and almost anyone who wants to hear beautiful music, hear music career success stories, ask questions, and get inspired.

Music education in our cities are so vital for children’s development. I want to give back to the types of organizations that have helped me live and grow with music. Orchestra education departments like the Minnesota Orchestra provide free concerts to children throughout the year. Public elementary and middle schools throughout the country are struggling to fight back on cuts to their free music programs being offered. Other public schools have felt the need to cut these music education programs out entirely.

If music (or that one thing that makes you who you are) is important to you, please consider a donation to help me fund this very important concert which will take place in early August, 2017 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Thank you.
