Life-Saving Surgical Treatment for Dumi's Cancer

Dumitru, who grew up at the Hand of Help Orphanage, was on the fast track to becoming an independent young man.
His passion for electronics had landed him a full scholarship at the University of Engineering and Robotics.
Throughout his time at the orphanage, Dumi, as the children at the orphanage call him, loved worshiping God through his guitar playing and was quick to befriend everyone. He continues to be a role model for the younger boys at the orphanage.
Dumitru’s clear path to a promising future came to a screeching halt in January, 2019 when he noticed a mass growing in an area that he had injured during a fall, a month prior.
Expecting it to be no more than a fractured rib, the news of him having to get a CT scan came as a surprise to Dumi.
With medical treatment in Romania being less than ideal, and with no one understanding the extent of the pathology growing inside of him, it took three weeks to get him in for a CT.
When the result finally came in, it caught us all off guard. Dumi was in stage IV cancer (later diagnosed as stage III). The staff and children wept as one big loving family. All of his dreams and his ambitions were shattered in one single solitary day.
Further testing proved the mass to be growing at an alarming rate and chemotherapy was started. After six completed rounds, we are grateful that Dumi was finally able travel to Vienna, Austria for a surgical consult, this being his last hope for a surgical procedure that had proven to exceed the level of expertise available in Romania.
We received the good news on 8/29/19 that Dumitru's lesion had not spread, and though it would require the expertise of the best cardio thoracic surgeons in Europe to remove the lesion (that is now the size of a grapefruit encompassing three ribs) and reconstruct his rib cage, diaphragm, and possibly remove a pulmonary lobe, surgery was finally an option.
An emergency surgery has been scheduled for September 4th, 2019.
The cost of the surgery and hospital stay alone will be around 30,000 euro and Dumitru will need to return for visits after the initial procedure.
