Kiungui is well again and soon heading home - thanks to your help

Dear caring friends and supporters,
We are coming back to you after a couple of months of ‘radio silence’. Kiungui has been through a very long and challenging recovery following her 6 weeks of radiotherapy. Over the past few months Kiungui has been able to rest and recover. Recently Kiungui commenced physio and speech therapy sessions. Last week Kiungui had a PET scan and was given the ‘all clear’ to go home to Papua New Guinea.

With that wonderful outcome, we are ready to share with you our great joy and emotions about Kiungui’s imminent return home to PNG. Kiungui’s primary carer, her mum, Lilly, had to return to PNG in late February, in order to attend to her vital work, running one of her country’s more effective NGOs working to end all forms of Violence and conflict- Voice for Change Jiwaka ([email redacted]) Last week Lilly presented face-to-face with PNG’s recently established Permanent Parliamentary Committee on Gender Equality, Women’s Empowerment and ending GBV. Lilly is a respected voice influencing national policy on the way forward to end this scourge.

Kiungui’s sister Sophie arrived last weekend and we witnessed a tearful reunion of these close siblings, after 8 months of family separation and anxiety. In early June, Lilly will return to Melbourne for work-related meetings. Kiungui, her sister Sophie and mother, Lilly will travel home together in the next two weeks.

For all the weeks that Kiungui was under treatment, she did not manage to see very much of Melbourne or Victoria. She is now enjoying time with her sister, as ‘tourists’ in local walks in Melbourne’s pleasant late Autumn weather. But the leaves have fallen and it’s very getting cold and it’s a good time to travel back home.

Looking back on Kiungui and her family’s struggle, it’s hard to express what they have been through these past 12 months and how grateful they are, that generous medical treatment in Melbourne was made possible and that it has been successful. A truly amazing journey made possible by many wonderful friends helping!

Your support to our fundraising, the gifted minds and hands of generous and highly skilled medical teams, the compassionate hospital foundations, a one-in-a-million, caring home host/doctor and her extended family, and a circle of close colleagues and friends, and all the prayers and vibes coming in from Kiungui’s home community – together, we did it!

Together we made Kiungui well again and she will now be able to pick up where she left off, back to pursuing her dreams in law, and supporting her mother and sisters, her aunts, and colleagues to delivering justice to her country women and children in need.
Thank-you dear supporters. Heartfelt thank-you to each and everyone of you!
