What is Art with Purpose?
Art with Purpose (AWP) is an aspiring social enterprise that produces and sells original artwork and other products to fund local and international community projects. It was founded in 2015 by two anthropology students from the University of Lethbridge, Bariyaa Ipaa and Cecilia Reid.
The project we are currently fundraising for is:
The Fanuel School Library Project
Art with Purpose is currently raising funds to create a library for the Fanuel Primary School in Mchinji, Malawi. Money going towards this cause will help to purchase materials necessary for the library, which will be thefirst library to exist at a primary school in rural Malawi.
This project is led by Aaron Maluwa, an outreach representative from Museums of Malawi. Aaron has been working alongside the University of Lethbridge for more than ten years to organize field studies for U of L students in Malawi.
How will establishing a library at a primary school benefit a whole community?
This library will not solely be used by students—it will be used by the entire community, as well as the four neighbouring ones.
Among many obvious factors like encouraging literacy in all ages, the library will provide a variety of services:
· Easy access to technology
· Safe space for youth to study and hangout
· Help farmers to access the global economy
· Access to HIV & Malaria education materials
· Present people with the tools and resources needed to succeed (e.g. help finding jobs)
· Allow students to continue learning if they cannot afford to be in school for a semester
This library will provide the community, and fourneighbouring communities, with the knowledge and resources needed to further develop and grow independently.
Breakdown of costs:
· 100% of the funds raised will be going directly towards the establishment of the library.
· Budget will be posted soon
Other Information:
· Bariyaa and Cecilia will be traveling back to Malawi in the fall of 2019 for several months to oversee the establishment of the library. Funds raised from this page will NOT go towards their trip. Their trip will be funded separately.
