Liam and Brennan, NICU Warriors

Liam and Brennan were born on Sunday, August 27th, 2017, following 5 weeks of pre-natal care at the IWK. On July 22nd (at 22 weeks and 6 days) Brennan’s water broke and thanks to mom’s medical care team at the IWK, they were able to stay safe and sound on the inside until 28 weeks. On August 27th, they performed an emergency c-section to deliver Brennan, and moments later, Liam. At birth, Liam weighed 2lbs 11oz and Brennan was 2lbs 6oz.
Brennan spent about 5 weeks with little amniotic fluid, and needed a bit more care immediately after delivery. Both boys were required to be on ventilators, then were moved down to CPAP, and eventually got to ditch the masks. Both boys are now breathing on their own and learning to take oral feeds without those pesky masks in the way!
Liam contracted an infection and ended up with sepsis and meningitis, resulting in an abscess in his brain. Thankfully neurosurgery was able to drain part of it, and now we wait to see if the antibiotics shrink it. At this point, it is not clear if the abscess will require surgery to be removed. It is likely that he will have to stay in the NICU at the IWK for a while longer.
All things considered, the boys are doing remarkably well. They are growing like crazy and we are looking forward to getting everyone back home and settled into life with three busy boys!
Brodie, Kaitlyn, and Ollie have been in Halifax since July 22nd and have been supported by countless family and friends. They have incurred expenses related to being away from home, missing work, travelling back and forth to PEI, and of course, preparing for the day that the boys will be able to come home!
