On September 20th, 2017, our beloved - as my mother would say - Puerto Rico was ravaged by Hurricane Maria. Since then, my family has been assessing how best help my elderly aunt who does not want to leave her home.
My Titi Nelly was very fortunate that her house didn’t suffer major damage, apart from her roof, that has been provided with a tarp by FEMA as a temporary measure until they can make the necessary repairs.
With that being said, her granddaughter and family have just moved to Ohio to start a new life. My Titi, has decided to stay on the island, accompanied by her young adult great-grandson, Jon. However, because she depended on her granddaughter for her errands, etc., she and John are now left with no means to get around.
Thus, we have decided that purchasing Jon a car is the most beneficial and practical means of providing them with help for the time being. The car will not only help with getting around, but allow Jon to get back to his studies and (hopefully) gain employment.
Many of you have so kindly reached out to me to ask about my family and how to help. I cannot accurately express how devastated I am that our sweet island may never be the same. I feel fortunate that my family has suffered far less than others, but my heart aches for so many. No donation is too small and all are greatly appreciated. If you are unable to donate, please do keep this beautiful island in your thoughts and if you are able to take action in other ways, such as calling you state representatives and demanding we provide more aggressive help, please do!
Extra funds will be put toward helping repair the roof and/or a generator as the weather will soon begin heating up again.
