Lewis St Cowichan Apartment Victim Fund

Just before 1pm December 31st 2020, a fire broke out at 2574 Lewis St in Duncan BC that has destroyed the home of some 32 families, and sent several to hospital.

From the Cowichan Valley Citizen Newspaper
'Dozens of people milled about in a daze in front of Lewis Apartments on Lewis Street Thursday afternoon as firefighters fought a blaze that swept through units on the fourth floor, sending residents scrambling to escape the inferno.

The call came in at 12:55 p.m. and fire crews from Duncan and North Cowichan’s South End as well as Maple Bay and Crofton halls were quickly on the scene and began putting up ladders to help people escape their balconies on the third and fourth floors, as well as beginning to put the fire out.

According to BCEHS, 10 ground ambulances were dispatched, in addition to an air ambulance.
Major injuries are reported.'

This Gofundme was established to provide funds to the victims of this fire. This will allow them to find replacement housing, clothing, and personal necessities. Most residents have lost almost everything due to fire damage and water damage; many may not have had insurance, and thus this fund will also go toward helping them rebuild.

2020 has been a tough year for many, however these families will have no where to go and nothing but the clothing on their backs. Please consider giving and helping those whom now have nothing.

***UPDATE*** 01/01/2021

We have received hundreds of calls of support for this horrible situation. With donations starting to come in we will be arranging a group charity account with Island Savings Cowichan; as well we will be working with a local accountant, CVRD Emergency Social Services and victims to prepare funding disbursement needs. The primary intent of all funds raised is to directly help victims with rehoming, food, clothing, special item needs. Additional funds that may not be initially utilized will go toward recovery efforts of those injured and to assist with any bills that they may have during a time where income is suspended due to injury or disability resulting from this incident.
