Introducing Level Up

Level Up is a new feminist organisation launching in 2017. Its mission: to build a community of people across Britain who can work together to end sexism.

Why?

Twentieth century feminists won unprecedented legal and political rights for women in the UK. The challenge today is to take on the social and cultural structures that keep sexism alive.

These are just some of the challenges we face:

100 years after British women won the right to vote we represent less than a third of Members of Parliament.
British women are still paid less than their male counterparts at work, and that pay the gap gets wider for non-white women.
Some estimates say hate crime against trans women has trebled in the last few years.
In the next three days a woman in the UK will be killed by a partner or former partner.

In the last few years we’ve seen a new wave of feminist activism in the UK, powered by the internet and grassroots activity. This feminist energy has huge potential but still lacks an organisational home. Without one it is hard to harness the desire of ordinary people who want to be part of a feminist community.

If hundreds of thousands of feminists in this country were all connected to each other, we could unlock the change needed to make Britain fairer.

Level Up will mobilise the energy and potential of feminists in the UK. We’ll use digital tools to build a community of hundreds of thousands of people, and equip them with the tools to tackle sexism wherever they find it.

What We Need

We already have the skills we need. We are Carys Afoko, Fran Grobke, Hanna Thomas, Hannah Lownsbrough, Rose Hall and Sondhya Gupta. We collectively bring campaigning experience from 38 Degrees, Greenpeace, the Labour Party, SumOfUs, All Out, 10:10, Amnesty International and the Runnymede Trust. We have the skills and experience to make Level Up a success, but we need your help.

We need money to hire our first staff member and pay for campaigning technology. If we can reach our target, we will have enough money in the bank to hire our first campaigner, and to buy the technology we need to connect thousands of feminists around Britain.

As soon as we have the money, we’ll start running feminist campaigns. These are the kinds of things we’ll be able to do, with your donation:

- Empower our members to tackle sexism when they encounter it in their personal lives, e.g. online resources or offline events for women trying to negotiate a pay rise.

- Hijack news stories and cultural moments to make the conversation more feminist e.g. using high profile rape cases like Ched Evans’ to talk about consent.

- Identify strategic advocacy moments where our community can affect real change e.g. targeting a brand for a sexist marketing campaign.

- Push businesses and employers to do better e.g. creating an index of the best and worst workplaces for women in the UK.

Please consider donating to Level Up.  If you do, then in 5 years time, you’ll know that you helped start an amazing organisation, which will have achieved countless feminist victories, and held a space for women in a political climate where equality is being squeezed.

You’ll know that your generosity and commitment made it possible!
