"She has meningitis," I was told when I questioned where Leticia was during her time student teaching. As her mentor teacher, I remember feeling so heartbroken that someone would have to go through this and be hospitalized for weeks. Little did I realize that this was a result of a long history of health concerns. For three years now, I have watched Leticia grow in so many ways. Professionally, she has become an amazing teacher. Academically, she continues her studies in every way possible. But, the one  thing she would love to grow the most -- her family -- is the one area she fights for the most. And this is because of those health struggles.

Four years ago, Leticia shared a dream with her husband, Brian, to start a family. After the first few months with no results, the anticipation set in. When would it happen? Would it be a boy or a girl? It was only a matter of time. After a year or so, the anticipation turned to confusion. Why isn't this working? What are we doing wrong? As years went by, the questions only continued. Why me? Is this ever going to happen? After three years, and many doctors later, Leticia was finally diagnosed with endometriosis and PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). As a result, Leticia has high levels of testosterone as well as cysts in her ovaries that hugely impact her fertility. After trying various medications and numerous treatments, including insemination, the years only continue to pass. Running out of options, Leticia's entire being has become affected. Seeking what little options were left, Leticia and Brian continue to be excited for what lies ahead. Hopeful, they made an appointment with a fertility specialist to find out more information about In Vitro Fertilization. As they left the appointment, that same hope turned into disappointment. In order to have a family, they would need upwards of $15,000, after health insurance coverages.

The $15,000 includes the cost of retrieval, cryofreezing the sperm and embryos, sending the embryos out for genetic testing, thawing the embryos, needle insertion, hatching, and hormonal injections as well as many other processes.

More importantly, the $15,000 would mean giving Leticia and Brian their hope again. It would mean the opportunity to play an important role in their child's life.
It would mean giving them the opportunity to grow the one thing in their life that they most yearn for -- a family. And, words cannot even capture the gratitude that Leticia and Brian would share if given this opportunity.
