Miracles happen everyday, and in Pia's case, it's awe inspiring and totally humbling. After 6 weeks in the hospital, she's home, sweet home. At 19 years old, she survived leukemia/aml, had a successful bone marrow transplant, and is in remission from type t cell leukemia, brain & spine tumor. We offer it all to Him, praise God, for only He knows the pain & suffering.
July 4, 2016 - Now we're back in the ICU with fungal pneumonia, intubated & waiting for some good news.

March 2016 - A visit for sinus surgery revealed a malignant tumor. Cancer found in the spinal cord & in her head. Another round of chemo? Definitely at least two intratechal rounds. She's had seizures, induced coma, still she hangs bravely...with a smile.
November 2015 - A year since Pia's diagnosis. All thumbs up, in remission. Ecstatic!

Most kids Pia's age have a Christmas vacation to look forward to. They're looking ahead to their first year of college, getting part-time jobs, and focusing on growing up - which is hard enough on its own.
Unfortunately, our Pia is facing a very different set of challenges. In mere days, she will return to the hospital to undergo a second round of chemotherapy. She will spend Christmas in the hospital.
After fainting at home with no explanation, our beloved Pia was diagnosed with acute leukemia within weeks of her 18th birthday. The cancer was sudden and aggressive, and when we first got her test results back, the numbers were startling.
Thankfully, Pia's spirit is so strong, and her body is fighting back. As of this week we are happy to report that after nearly four weeks of treatment, her leukemia is in remission.
However, to be in remission at this early stage is rare. Fighting Leukemia is a tough battle to say the least, and in order to make sure Pia emerges victorious, her doctors are preparing to continue treatment. She'll need to undergo at least 1 or 2 more rounds of chemo and a possible bone marrow transplant.
As we all know, healthcare costs these days are unfair and outrageous, and Pia's case has been no different.
In the Philippines, there is no such thing as healthcare coverage - the entire weight of the treatment cost has been left on the shoulders of her family.
In less than 4 weeks of treatment, the hospital bills have added up to a number which will AT LEAST double over her upcoming months of treatment. There is no option to pay it off on an installment basis.
Family and friends have helped as much as they could, but you can imagine the helplessness we all feel, as our hope for Pia's full recovery is met with mounting debts that are already too much and will only continue to grow. Yet in order to ensure or maintain Pia's remission, the treatment must continue.
As Pia - who's already been through so, so much - looks ahead to taking on several months of treatment, we are cautiously optimistic. She is amazingly strong, not just for an 18-year-old but for anyone, and her strength to fight back has inspired and encouraged us all. It is heartbreaking to consider that Pia's recovery may hinge on our ability to raise money.
That's why we as her family have decided to join together to raise money and awareness for Pia's situation. It is the least we can do to give her parents a less worrisome year ahead - with a sick daughter, money is the last thing they should have to worry about.
1 US Dollar equals 44.50 Phillippine pesos. Each and every dollar counts. ANY contribution helps - no matter how small.
Her body is responding to treatment, but the disease doesn't give up easily - and neither do we.
Pia is everything to us, and we as her family are inspired by her fighting spirit to keep fighting alongside her.
