Hi, I’m Chelinay Gates, and I’m excited to share the incredible story of Kutalaani - From the Stars, a book I’ve written and illustrated about Gerry Moses Martin, a blind Aboriginal man whose life is a powerful testament to triumph over adversity.

Gerry, now 64, believes that his ancestors speak to him through classic Hollywood films. In this realm where dreams and reality collide, he holds the banner for all who have suffered, living a life full of poise, dignity, charisma, humour, and generosity of spirit. His story is one of resilience and hope, and it needs to be heard.

The Project:

Kutalaani - From the Stars is a 170-page book, fully referenced, and ready for the world. I’ve already begun recording it as a radio play/audio-book, and the response has been nothing short of incredible. A talented group of artists—10 musicians, traditional Indigenous Elders from the Pilbara, and contemporary Indigenous singers—have come together to create an original soundtrack for the project. Two young men from Guildford Grammar School, as well as professional country and opera singers, are also contributing their voices.

Here’s where you come in:

The funds will go towards:

1. The Self-publish and launch of the novella Kutalaani - From the Stars that I’ve written and illustrated this year.

2. Paying the artists and musicians who have generously donated their time and talent to the audio-book and soundtrack.

3. Launching the audio-book online and making it accessible to as many people as possible including indigenous communities and schools.

4. Producing a documentary mini-film titled Gerry, which will be a fun, heartfelt look at Gerry transforming into iconic film characters like Wednesday Addams, John Wayne, and Madame Butterfly. A film producer is on board, but the project requires funds to hire equipment, cameraman and editor.

5. Creating a podcast that expands on the themes and behind-the-scenes stories of Kutalaani and the journey of this project.
