Nocheztlicalli - Museo Ecológico de Grana Cochinilla y Nopal, located 5 minutes from the city of Oaxaca, Mexico,

Through the dissemination of art, science and culture of natural dyes we have supported the development of skills and inspiration of children and young people to discover, appreciate and conserve the environment, contributing to the improvement of quality education. We are backed by 50 years dedicated to training women, artisans and farmers in the production of cactus, tuna and natural colorants. In addition to having rescued ancient dyeing techniques and innovated new applications of the grana cochineal dye. Throughout our trajectory, more than 250,000 people have visited Nocheztlicalli.

The museum operates as a nonprofit organization, and depends on its self-generated income, thanks to the fees from guided tours and the sale of natural dyes. Due to the health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, since March 2020, the Museum has closed guided tours to the public; however, we continue to work behind closed doors, caring for and preserving the grana insect and its habitat alive, since its biological cycle cannot be interrupted.

The purpose is to raise funds to renovate and guarantee the continuity of operation of the museum, so that children and young students and the general public can learn about the living insect of the grana cochineal and the colors of nature, a cultural legacy of art and color of our ancestors, once it is able to reopen its doors to the public.

We want to continue preserving alive this tradition and cultural legacy of art and color of our ancestors; so that new generations of children and their families continue to enjoy this space of knowledge and nature. Therefore, we need your help to raise USD$ 5,000 to be able to carry out the following activities:

1.- Maintenance of the garden 20%, our nopal orchard is 40 years old, many of the nopal (catus old) for this reason it is necessary to prune and replant new leaves. The funds raised will be used to pay for the labor to expand the nopal orchard by carrying out various activities: pruning the cactus stalks, preparing the land, planting the nopal and cleaning the orchard

2.- Adapt the facilities (toilets) 20% Currently we have 1 toilet in operation, we need to improve and expand the bathrooms to 4, two for women and 2 for men; in addition to installing disinfectant equipment and 3 sinks for the visiting public. The funds raised will be used to purchase and install 4 complete restrooms, which includes the opening of the drainage, separator modules, plumbing, and equipment.

3.- Improve the dyeing area. 30% In the dyeing workshops with natural dyes we use an “anafre” and/or wood fire. We are very careful to avoid accidents when we have children and young visitors. Now we need your support to remodel this area, fix the storage of materials and firewood, and establish an exclusive area where we can dye safely, in addition to acquiring supplies for this process such as pots and supplies.

4.- Reforestation.  30% there is a bioconservation project to replant trees for the next generation of women dyeing natural dyes. On land near their museum, a vivero (nursery) is planted with young trees, as well as other native Oaxaca seeds such as corn, beans, squash and garbanzo.

The campaign LET'S RESCUE NOCHEZTLICALLI MUSEUM! invites everyone to get to know and support this Oaxacan initiative. We humbly ask that if you are able, please consider supporting the Nocheztlicalli-Museum, with your donation we can keep our space of nature and culture operating and promoting the art and science of natural dyes to children and youth.

Little things make a big difference! thank you!
