As some of you know, my brother in law Bryce Hart recently was admitted to UWMC regarding his heart condition.
Quick back story, Bryce was born with a congenital heart defect which led to his first heart surgery at 6 days old. Unfortunately he has to have 1 year check ups to make sure there is no valve failure, followed by an estimated time of the possible next surgery. These valves only last ten to fifteen years for the rest of his life.
Fast forward to January of 2018 for his yearly cardiac check up. He was informed that his aortic valve was showing signs of wearing out. Which lead the doctors to inform him that he would need another open heart surgery to replace an existing valve sooner than later but with no exact time frame. The doctors were still confident though that he would make it at least another year before needing another check up. Giving Bryce and Nicole some time to get their marital insurance and finances in line.
Then, unexpectedly, this last week Bryce went to the doctor for what he thought was pneumonia. Unfortunately, an EKG at urgent care landed him an ambulance ride to the Emergency room at UWMC in Seattle, where many tests for his heart revealed otherwise. He had been walking around with what doctors explain as a “failing aorta” the bottom of his heart was not working like it should and the valve was leaking tremendously. Who knows what a couple more days or even hours would have cost him. After many tests, a major surgery, and a new heart valve later, he is almost ready to go home.
Unfortunately, this journey has just begun for Bryce and Nicole, they are sadly with out medical insurance at the time and have numerous medical costs to be covered. Not to forget, Bryce will now be placed on blood thinners for 3 months and a daily antibiotic through IV for 6 weeks followed by weekly blood test to make sure there is no Endocarditis (infection of the heart). If he does have this condition, he will be rushed back in for open heart surgery and the valve will have to be replaced again.
Prayers and good health are all that Nicole and Bryce are asking for at this time, but as we all know they would give their shirt of their back to a stranger in need. If you are reading this and have ANY extra money to help them in this unexpected devastation, they will forever be grateful.
