Let’s Help Rick Dorsch Kick Cancer!

In April 2018, my dear uncle Rick Dorsch started to not feel well. Being the hard working devoted man that he is, he shrugged off the constant fatigue and chest tightness and chalked it up to allergies or a virus. Well, it wasn't either and it didn't go away...
Rick Dorsch -- husband to Virginia (Talaski) Dorsch, father to Cassie (Kale) Hill, Kellie (Terry) Hiller, and Lacey, grandfather to McKenzie, Mason, and Quinn, family to many more, friend to so many others -- was diagnosed with Chronic Myelomonocystic Leukemia (CMML) and yes, it is as scary as the name sounds. This is a rare type of leukemia that is difficult to treat. The only cure is a bone marrow transplant.
Clearly, this is devastating news and has resulted in a lot of uncertainty. Rick is not currently able to work - forced to leave his coworkers and the financial stability of full time employment. He now is battling the leukemia full time. And anyone who knows him even a little, knows that he will kick this cancer's butt and get back to his life, family, and work.
He is currently undergoing aggressive chemotherapy at Bad Axe hospital along with weekly blood level checks and blood transfusions (as needed). These blood transfusions create a risk of infection. Rick is preparing for a full bone marrow transplant in Detroit at Karmanos Cancer Institute. This procedure requires a 4-week hospitalization with high dosage of chemo to kill off the cancerous blood cells. After the hospitalization, he will need to stay within the Detroit area for at least a month to several months depending on how his body reacts to the transplant. Staying within the area will allow him to be close in case of an emergency and also be convenient for the several follow-up appointments to check his body for reactions and to check the blood levels/status.
We cannot tell the future; we don't know how long it will be before he is in remission; we don't know a lot right now. But we do know that Rick is feisty (to say the least), has a strong faith, a community of supporters behind him, and he will kick this in the butt! I think we can all agree that he should be focusing on his health and recovery. NOT be worrying about upcoming medical bills (already over $6000), lost wages, travel expenses, and other costs that are likely down the road.
