Let’s help my mom see again....

A couple of weeks ago my mother woke up with complete loss of vision in her left eye. Thinking it was due to cateracts she made an emergency appointment with her eye doctor. That one appointment suddenly became days of appointments and emergency bloodwork. Ultimately, they found she had suffered a neurological stroke in her eye resulting in a condition known as NAION. NAION means Non anterior ischemic optic neuropathy. Basically, there is no blood flowing out of her eye to the optic nerve. There are two types of this specific condition. One type can be treated with steroids and the eyesight will return, the other has no treatments at all and can get worse resulting in loss of vision in the other eye as well. The type my mother was diagnosed with is the one with no cure. As you can imagine, this sudden news was heart breaking for my mother and to all of us as well. Everything she loves and enjoys involves her being able to see. Although there is no cure for what she has, there are specialists all over the world that have run trials on patients with this type of diagnosis. The specialists have found alternative methods of treatments to regain partial vision in their patients. Some patients have even regained their eyesight completely.  My mother reached out to one of these locations in Florida and scheduled  an appointment only to find out that she is now also unable to fly due to the pressure. The only way to get to these doctors is to drive or take the train.  As you can imagine, the out of pocket costs associated with these facilities are high and most are not covered by  insurance. My hope is to raise enough money to take some/all of the financial burden off of my mother so she can travel to these specialists and get the treatment she needs.
