Help Frank “Live Life Large Again “

Frank Diasparra has called Punta Gorda his home for the past 15 years.  Over that time he has provided timeless hours and effort for charitable activities and has given back to the city he calls home. Frank is an avid cyclist, motorcyclist, and fisherman. He has touched the lives of so many people that it’s difficult not to fall for his charm, kindness and energy, just all out good feelings he shares with everyone he meets. He’s the brother you didn’t have, the friend you want to hang out with, just a great person to know.

On October 12, 2018, while riding home on his bike Frank had an extremely serious accident injuring his face, breaking his neck and damaging his spinal cord. He was airlifted to Lee Memorial’s Trauma ICU where he had surgery on his neck and also on his face. The prediction outcome was very bleak, Frank would be paralyzed from the biceps down and would require facial reconstruction surgeries!

For 23 days Frank was in the Trauma Intensive Care Unit, he was on a ventilator for two plus weeks and subsequently, Drs. were able to insert a tracheostomy, eventually allowing Frank to breath on his own. Things were touch and go and at one time we thought we were going to lose him, but thanks to the medical team at Lee Memorial, Frank was able to begin recovery from the life threatening injuries.

On November 15, 2018, Frank was taken to the Boston area to a rehabilitation hospital, specializing in spinal cord injuries.  The only way to get Frank there was to contract with Angel MedFlight which is an out of pocket expense.  After 6 weeks of intensive rehab Frank has movement in both arms, his right leg and partial movement in his left leg.  The prognosis is guarded and hopeful that a regiment of extensive rehab, Frank will regain use of his legs and possibly fingers on one if not both hands, but time will tell.

Spinal cord injuries are a slow and long recovery with much needed rehabilitation and adaptive medical equipment such as mobility devices, braces, a medical bed, ramps, and other home modifications, just to name a few. Frank has been in the hospital for 10 weeks now with another 4-8 weeks remaining, then there will be ongoing outpatient rehabilitation for many, many more months.  Insurance pays for only some of these items so along with deductibles, co-pays, and out of pocket costs, expenses are adding up quickly.

This GoFundMe account has been established to help with medical costs and to provide the necessary adaptive items needed for a quality of life and to enable Frank to return home to the challenges of daily activities we all take for granted, simple things like getting dressed, personal hygiene, walking to the fridge to get a snack or drink.  This account is meant to help Frank and Susan as they go through the darkest of days and those in which they see hope.

Your generosity is greatly appreciated and will help provide comfort for the very long and slow road to recovery.  Should you like to make a donation by check, please make it out and send it to Susan Diasparra, PO Box 511688, Punta Gorda, FL 33951.  Thank you again.
