Let's get Sang to Nationals!

Sang Biak Cung is a very normal 11 year-old. He’s got the usual interests of most Grade 5 boys: running around, playing videogames and shooting hoops on the basketball court with friends. He attends school at Pembroke Primary in Mooroolbark, where he enjoys Maths, PE and Reading.
But, along with thousands of other Burmese born Hakha Chin children and their families, Sang is a refugee.
Sang was born in Burma (The Republic of the Union of Myanmar) however at the age of 4, Sang and his toddler sister Ruth, fled Burma with their parents – “she was so cute” he recalls. Little did Sang know at the time, his family was fleeing impending persecution due to political instability in Myanmar (Burma) at that time.
Sang remembers how hard it was for him to sleep in India. “There was really bad pollution and smoke, there were mice and insects in our house, and we would be locked in at night. There were robbers. It was frightening."
“We really wanted to come to Australia. Mum said we had to pray more and more for Australia.”
Sang enrolled at Pembroke Primary School only days after his arrival in Australia. Sang has done exceptionally well in his 2 years of schooling at Pembroke and in that time he has grown as an avid learner, instinctive school leader and talented sportsman.
Earlier this week, Sang competed in the State levelled long jump event – his second attempt at a National level competition since being in Australia. He improved his Personal Best on Monday, with a jump of 4.70m. Incredibly, his natural, raw athletic talent has landed him a position in representing Victoria at a National level in the 2017 Pacific School Games in Adelaide. As a school community, we could not be prouder of Sang! Not only is he a phenomenal athlete, he is also a humble and appreciative member of our community who has achieved greatness despite the adversity he has faced at such a young age.
To get Sang to Nationals we need to raise in excess of $3000. This will cover his flights, accommodation, insurance, uniforms, registration and entry into the 5 day competition. Any additional funds will be donated to Sports without Borders – a not for profit organisation which provides support for young people from refugee backgrounds to overcome the barriers of participation in community sport.
Every donation, big or small, money or heart, will go an incredibly long way in supporting Sang, and without it, Nationals is just a dream.
