Lets get Rob his final dreams

Hi Everyone,

For many of you this may be the first time you are hearing of dad’s battle with cancer. Dad’s journey began in 2014 when he was diagnosed with aggressive stage 3 bowel cancer. I will never forget this time as he was living in Perth with Vince and I and it was the first day of my new job that he had a routine colonoscopy.

Dad bravely fought through major surgery to remove a section of his bowel and extensive chemotherapy to regain full heath and be in remission for 2 years. During this time he was able to move back to Victoria for work to be with mum, see his three grandchildren born plus walk his only daughter down the aisle.

In December last year the UGLY horrible disease returned, this time to his lungs and spine. Despite routine checks and advances in medical technology, Dad’s cancer is very aggressive and cannot be treated. So far we have been advised that his life expectancy is around 15 months.

For those of you that don’t know Dad let me fill you in on what I know. Robert Cherry or Rob, Rupit, Robbo, Fluffy, Pop, Cherry, Plum is 59 (60 in October), he is A Son to Lorna, Husband to Anita, Father to Catherine, Andrew and Richard, Father in law to Zan, Vince and Laura, Grandfather to Lilly (3), Billy (2) and Bruce (1). He is a kind gentle sole who dedicated most of his life to helping other people through his direct affiliations with Scouting, Rotary and Army Reserves over the last 40 years.

So why am I telling you all of this, Dad like most people has a wish list.  I know he and Mum won’t ask for help and as much as possible we have rallied together with mum to achieve and finance his wishes, provide medical treatment and assisted care. To relieve some of the burden, especially on mum, we are hoping to raise some funds to ensure Mum will continue to be supported in the future and Dad gets to leave this world a happy man.

Three key items on dads list is to renew his wedding vows and honeymoon (trip to Tassie) with mum, a trip on the Ghan from Adelaide to Darwin and to finish his retreat at home. His retreat consists of a cellar as many of you are aware Dad is very passionate about his Merlot and brewing his own port, with a room above it which will become Rupit’s command post.  The room above is going to be a space dad can go and relax and enjoy all he has worked hard for during his life. So far the site has been cleared and dug out but construction has stalled due to future expense.

While I have your attention especially those of a similar age to dad or those whose parents are, I cannot stress enough how important it is to follow routine checks for cancer and not settle for a diagnosis from a doctor if you are not happy. Without dad’s initial bowel screening test we definitely wouldn’t of had him around for the last few years.

On behalf of Dad (Rob) and our family we sincerely thank you in advance for your generosity and support.
