Most of you know I teach in a high- needs school of immigrant students. We have a 94% graduation rate and have more successes than heartbreak. Sometimes we have both. This is one of those times. Our goal with this fundraiser is to provide a laptop for a very deserving senior as she heads to college.
One of our best students - I’m maintaining her privacy and so will call her Carly - is graduating this year with a 93 gpa and 6 AP courses and is graduating with an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors. She had a perfect score on her Calculus AP exam in junior year; we offer no higher math for her. She is also a beautiful writer in English and Spanish. Despite having only been in the country for 6 years, she is winning the writing award from AP English. She tutors other students, throws teachers surprise birthday parties, comes early and stays late, and never turns in subpar work. In short, she’s the perfect student and a wonderful girl and if the world were fair she’d be headed to one of the best colleges in the country, but that’s a different story.
We have recently discovered that Carly has accomplished all of her high grades without a computer or even wifi at home. She also has obligations toward her younger siblings. More gut-wrenching is the fact that there have been worse issues in her home that I won’t discuss. I will not let her be defined by this, but rather want to celebrate her tenacity and her ability.
The teachers at my school would like to send Carly off to college with a new laptop as a sign of our admiration and support. She deserves so much and has accomplished more with less than almost anyone I know. We can’t fix a lot of things in her life, and we can’t right all the wrongs, but we can do this for her.
