For The Heart of Cherish

Donation protected
Cherish Sims is a 13 year-old young lady who was recently diagnosed with heart failure. She has been in the hospital receiving medication since August 25, 2018.   Unfortunately, the medication is not working and she is undergoing open heart surgery.  We are at the hospital now while Cherish is having a VAD (Ventricular Assist Device) placed in her heart. This will pump the blood through her body, since her own heart can no longer do it on its own. This is temporary, and more than likely she will need a heart transplant. This diagnosis happened suddenly, and without warning so it has been especially devastating for our family.

Cherish is the second eldest, and she is especially close to her older brother, who just went away for his first year of college. When he found out his sister was sick, and she was asking for him, he returned to be with his little sister. Cherish also has a younger 9-year old brother  and a very busy 3-year old little sister.

When I asked Cherish what are her favorite things to do, she replied, “I like Basketball, Hanging Out with Friends, Talking (a lot!), and Sleeping. And I love to sing any type of music.” Cherish is a sweet, very smart, intelligent, beautiful young girl who has been very brave through all of this.  Her Nena said the only time she got really upset is when the doctor told her she would not be able to play basketball again.

Cherish had just started 8th grade when she got sick. She has always been an A & B Honor Roll student at her Christian academy where she says her favorite subject is “English.” When asked about college, Cherish said she wants to study Criminal Justice because “I want to be a lawyer because I like to argue for, and support the underdog. And in my opinion, getting justice is the best feeling in the world!”

After surgery, Cherish will continue to need extensive follow-up medical care, expensive medications,   physical therapy, and cardiac rehab. She will need life-long treatment to continue to thrive.

This family has been pillars in their church, and their community with a Christian center that always has its doors open, and willing to help anyone in need. They are giving, generous and kind hearted individuals. Now they need our help in their time of need.

When I asked Cherish what she wanted people to know about her she answered, “A lot of people think I’m mean because I’m so quiet.  But once they get to know me and I’m comfortable, I’m really outgoing, and a nice person.”  Cherish is really looking forward to returning to school and “hanging out with my best friends, Hannah, Kara, Kayla, and Kiara.”

One of Cherish’s biggest wish is that she can have a golden retriever as a service dog to help her through this life changing transition. A dog will be great support, and can alert the family if anything is wrong.

They are counting on us, and their faith to get them through this very difficult time.  Please send prayers up for Cherish and her family. And if you can, please make a donation to help this family. Anything you can give will be greatly appreciated, and every penny will count.   THANK YOU!!
