Let's Get Monica Walking Again

Donation protected
Our daughter-in-law Monica Boucher Berryman at the age of 46 suffered a devastating stroke resulting from a blood clot on June 15th while at home in Lawrence, Kansas.  Since June 24th she has been at the Kansas Rehabilitation Hospital in Topeka, Kansas and will soon be transferred to skilled nursing facility.

Now, Monica and her family needs help. The stroke has left Monica’s right side paralyzed. She is known a gregarious talker who now is unable to say more then a few words at a time. She is receiving excellent physical, occupational, and speech therapy.  While the insurance is paying many of the bills the expenses of surgery to remove the blood clot, time in ICU, physical and speech therapy, and continuing care and therapy for at least the next 2 to 3 months are devastating to the family finances. The expenses for treatment continue to accrue and funds are needed in the next months.  The funds will ensure that Monica continues to receive the much need physical and speech therapy for Monica to Walk and Smile Again.

Monica is an exceptional person who now needs the help she has so often bestowed on both friends and strangers. As her husband Robert has said, “Monica will help anyone no matter race, color, or gender.” Early in their marriage he witnessed her generosity. She was helping a lady in their apartment building in Nevada. Robert came home from the night shift at the prison to find a lady sleeping in his chair. Apparently, she had some type of domestic dispute and needed a place to stay. So, Monica opened her home to help a neighbor. Other times it was her friends that needed a place to live and stay. When a friend was stranded in a blizzard she drove and picked her up, so she had a place to stay. Monica does not see color, race or gender she just sees a human being and a possible friend. According to Robert, “while on patrol, I heard a call about a lady in a wheelchair sitting in the rain not knowing what to do. I was in the area but heard on the radio that someone had picked her up. So, I disregarded and drove off. Minutes later I get a call from Monica saying she had picked up the lady and drove her back home (I had a feeling it was her).”

If it not doing random acts of kindness, she is trying to help women feel better about how they look on the outside and inside. She is active in May Kay because she loves helping women. She truly tries to live by the MK core values. Numerous times she has received the Miss GO-Give award. Monica’s smile tells it all about her. Upon meeting her you know you have a new friend who will go above and beyond as a friend and mentor. She is a great friend and mother to her two boys Andrew and Zachary. She has been married to Robert Berryman for 22 years. Robert is in law enforcement in Kansas and is a Sargent First Class in the U.S. Army Reserve with two deployments to Afghanistan. He is scheduled to retire from the Army after 24 years in March 20021. Monica and Robert are life partners.
