Teachers for Tranquility

We are teachers in San Jose, CA and are saddened to see children and families who are stressed out, depressed, or anxious every day.  We give them all of the love and attention we can muster, but it never seems to be enough.  Mental health services have been cut in schools all over the state, but in our school of 860 children, we do not have a school psychologist and have only one counselor.  Roughly one-third of our population have documented despression, anxiety, or attention disorders.  As classroom teachers, we feel that we are responsible for their entire well-being, not just teaching the curriculum.

As we have continued to brainstorm how to help children and families with these struggles, we came across the Breathe for Change program.  This training is a 200-hour program that focuses on training teachers how to help enhance classroom learning environments to nurture children's social and emotional health, develop positive schoolwide programs to help these students, and to train teachers how to cope and handle these tough situations.

We plan to implement mindfulness curriculum in our classrooms, begin a parent and teacher training program, and create after school programs to teach students skills to help navigate this complicated world.

The training is in the Fall and the full cost is $5200 for both of us.  While we have already received scholarships of $500 each from Breathe for Change, we still need the remaining tuition for our program.  We teach in the lowest-paying district in the Bay area, with living expenses in the Bay area what they are, and in a district that is unable to reimburse this type of training, we are asking for your help.

We have already paid the deposit, but the remaining tuition of $4100 is due before the program begins in September.  We are asking for funds early to secure our participation in the program and allow for time to plan programs for next school year.

Hundreds of our students, families, and fellow teachers will be eternally grateful for your generosity.  Its use could positivally impact our community for years.
