-LESS is a single camera, dramedy web series that follows the lives of four homeless people as they attempt to survive in a city that wishes they didn’t exist.
-LESS was created by director and writer Lyric A.G. Esparza with the following values in mind:
WRITE: Write unapologetic drama and biting humor. Challenge tropes, don’t take the easy way out, and - at every opportunity - pursue originality.
DIVERSIFY: Cultivate a cast and crew that champions women, people of color, people with disabilities, people from the LGBTQ+ community, and plus-sized folks.
UNDERSTAND: Responsibly represent issues related to homelessness, mental illness, domestic violence, addiction, sexual abuse, and trauma.
SEEK: Work with a team of folks who have dealt with the issues represented in the series.
We are a female-heavy team that believes developing homeless characters with realistic backgrounds humanizes a population that is constantly overlooked - especially here in Seattle. Exploring the narratives of how a person becomes homeless and what social and circumstantial limitations might cause them to stay that way allows for high stakes and entertaining dramedy.
We’re hoping to raise a budget to help pay for:
● Props, wardrobe, and makeup.
● Various technical equipment.
● Craft service for our unpaid crew and 20+ cast members during 120 hours of production.
● Costs for locations and permits.
● Costs for our first screening.
● Costs for website domain ownership.
● Miscellaneous costs like travel and festival submittals.
10 % percent of all donations will be given to Seattle nonprofits working with the homeless population.
Financial support for -LESS would mean the ability to create dynamic scenes and characters through costume and effects, like a massive party hosted by Lifestyle Vampires or a parade of hipster douchebags that attempts to gentrify a homeless person’s business. It would provide essential sustenance to cast and crew who, without pay, are passionate enough about -LESS to spend 120 hours on set. It would allow us to execute a cohesive, clean and technically masterful series.
When you support -LESS, you are supporting women in the creative arts as writers, directors, cinematographers, actors, and crew. You are championing on-screen diversity. You’re agreeing that homelessness is not a one-sided issue - that there are depths worth exploring. You are not conforming to the white-washed world of mainstream media. You’re supporting a challenging, dynamic narrative with great potential.
To all prospective donors: the best writing in the world would not suffice to express how grateful we are to have your support - small, medium, or large. -LESS is a unique show with complex and damaged characters that took months to write, and many more hours to develop with our talented actors. We are honored to have stumbled upon an idea that, we hope, will become meaningful in conversations surrounding homelessness and trauma.
