LESSONS FOR LHUNGTSE
From an early age I remember my Uncle Bill bringing Christmas presents home from Kham Province where the Tibetan culture still thrives. Bill Warnock has been going there for over thirty years to help the region's people with various medical issues through his non-profit based in Boulder, Colorado. Boulder-Lhasa Sister City Project, formed in 1986, develops and implements non-political exchanges of mutual benefit providing health care, education, environmental protection, technology, culture and art.
Through his work with the disease, neurocysticercosis, he met Lhungtse. Since 2001 she has suffered from neurocysticercosis which eventually caused her blindness in 2005. Bill's non-profit helped Lhungtse get the brain surgery needed to save her life. Lhungtse still struggles with the consequences of this disease while she continues to get the medical care needed.
Last year Lhungtse discovered the piano! The photo above was taken at a remote lodge near her home in Kham. This was the first time she had ever heard or played a piano! The piano brings Lhungtse much joy and serenity. Being geographically isolated and only knowing her Tibetan language, it has been difficult for her to learn this instrument successfully. With this fundraiser, my goal is to provide her with a quality keyboard and lessons. Further contributions will allow us an eight-day crash course on this keyboard as well as pianos in the region. By using her Tibetan number system, accompanied with Braille stickers on her new keyboard, I will provide her with basic instruction and education with the aid of a local guide/interpreter.
Last Christmas, my uncle asked me if I would be able to go to China and teach her how to play. In late October I will travel there for this musical mission. I am beyond thrilled to have this opportunity and am grateful for any and all support! Thank you for your time and consideration.
