Leslie & Daniel Flood Fund

Everybody knows of the devastation Houston has faced with the hurricane and flooding recently. The level of support I see even from all the way on the East Coast where I'm currently at is heartwarming, with local businesses here raising money to send down to flood victims. Hopefully everything that is raised makes its way down and at least in some aspect provides relief, though for many, it won't be enough, and will be a long journey of completely rebuilding their lives that will probably take years.

My little sister moved to the Houston area with her husband Daniel, who had been moved for work, and their two kids Ava & Amelia, about 2 weeks before the hurricane hit. They closed on their first house, and were starting to get settled in when disaster hit. She said one minute they thought they were going to be fine because they were already a couple of days into the storm, and the next, water is rising so fast around them they barely were able to drive out without stalling the vehicle. They had to leave so fast that they didn't have time to grab much to take with them.

They made it to a hotel, then Daniel went back by boat and the house was flooded about halfway up the front door. He grabbed a few necessities that he could fit in the boat, moved electronics and other high dollar items to elevated places in the house, thinking the worst of the flooding had passed and they would be fine. The water rose another 8 feet, completely submerging the entire house, and taking everything they owned that they were not able to carry with them.

I was shocked to learn that the flood insurance they purchased didn't kick in for 30 days. Looking at the high risk flood plain, it looked like the line was right on their property which would have meant flood insurance kicked in the day they purchased it, but apparently they were ten feet away from that line, so none of their belongings are covered.

In time, I'm hoping that FEMA follows through and is able to assist in at least some, if not all home repairs. However, none of their personal belongings will be covered. All appliances- gone. All furniture- gone. All electronics- gone. Most of their clothes were lost. Imagine everything you've accumulated over a 10, 15, 20+ year period, being gone in an instant.

I wish I was in a position where I could just replace everything  for them, but that's not the case. I'm going to help as much as I can, up to / including being part of the rebuilding/ repairing of the house, but it won't be enough, so I'm asking for help on their behalf. There are times in life where you just need help, there's no getting around it, and this, for Leslie, Daniel, Ava, and Amelia, is undoubtedly one of those times.

Everything that is donated, minus gofundme's fees, is going straight to Leslie and Daniel to help them with the rebuilding of their lives.
